Brock Lesnar: The Perfect Storm Isn't so Perfect for the WWE

Tim KeeneyJun 7, 2018

There's no denying Brock Lesnar's popularity, marketability and his status at the top of the man chain (there's a reason he has nicknames like War Machine, The Beast and The Freak). But I have one simple question: Why?

Despite being a massive human being with biceps that rival the size of my head, what exactly does Lesnar bring to the ring?

First of all, he's god awful on the microphone. His acting is downright atrocious, and whenever he has something to say, it's both short-lived and painful to witness. Just take a look at his most recent Tout, announcing he would leave the WWE forever:

Seriously. Give this guy an Emmy. There's a reason Lesnar can't go anywhere without Paul Heyman, who is terrific on the mic and essentially acts as the big man's mouth.

But none of that is supposed to matter because of what The Next Best Thing—that's another thing: No one not named Shaquille O'Neal is supposed to have this many nicknames—supposedly brings inside the ring.

When it comes down to it, though, is his wrestling prowess really that great?

He's massive and has all kinds of experience in Mixed Martial Arts, but it's clear to me when watching Lesnar that those skills, while promising, don't always deliver the experience that professional wrestling is supposed to deliver.

I mean, if I wanted to watch someone continually put opponents in an armbar (how many more arms is he going to break?), I would just watch videos of Ronda Rousey. She at least delivers those not directly after being Pedigree'd.

To be fair, I get the appeal with Lesnar. He's been involved with the WWE since the early 2000s. He's developed a huge fanbase, he has the name recognition and, for some fans, he brings along that nostalgia factor.

He's good for business.

But I just continue to be less and less impressed with the big man's ability to entertain, and I feel like that should be a pretty large, realistic goal for these, uh, entertainers.
