Mike Wallace Will End Holdout and Report to Pittsburgh Steelers Camp

James DudkoMay 31, 2018

NFL.com's Ian Rapoport reports that Mike Wallace will end his holdout and report to training camp for the Pittsburgh Steelers.

That's great news for a Steelers passing game that needs the vertical threat that Wallace provides. As the NFL's premier deep weapon, Wallace can stretch any secondary and has become a prolific target during the past two seasons.

Wallace took the league by storm in 2010, registering 60 receptions for 1,257 yards, at a whopping 21.0 yards per catch average. His big-play capability helped propel the Steelers to the Super Bowl.

Wallace followed that banner campaign up with another 1,000-yard season in 2011. He caught 72 passes for 1,193 yards and became the one player on the Steelers' offense opposing teams truly fear.

However, his offseason has been marred by a prolonged contract dispute with Steelers management. The situation wasn't helped when the team decided to give fellow wideout Antonio Brown fresh terms instead of finalising a deal for Wallace.

The fourth-year pro believes himself worthy of a salary on a par with, or even exceeding, the NFL's top wide receivers. While his numbers indicate he is a player on the rise, only two 1,000 yard seasons, seems insufficient to justify the Steelers making that level of investment.

However, Rapoport's report suggests the 26-year-old flanker has told teammates he may sign his restricted free agent offer sheet. That would mean a team would have to offer first-round value to pry Wallace away from Pittsburgh.

Even if it's only for a year, the presence of Wallace makes the Steelers offense dangerous, giving them the ability to score from anywhere on the field. Another season of big plays may even force the Steelers to grant the 2009 third-round pick the lucrative terms he feels he deserves.
