Alexander Buttner: Manchester United Land Dutch Defender on 5-Year Deal

Finally, Manchester United have made official the biggest signing of the summer—Defender Alexander Buttner is now a Red Devil.

I kid, I kid, that Robin van Persie guy was apparently a pretty big deal. But a little defensive depth never hurt anyone, and Buttner is a nice young player to add into the back line rotation at Old Trafford.

"Dutch defender Alexander Büttner has today completed his medical, agreed personal terms and signed for Manchester United on a five-year contract until 2017.

The 23-year-old, who was part of Holland's preliminary squad for this summer's European Championship, joins the Reds from Vitesse Arnhem, where he made 119 appearances over the past four years."

If the £3.9 million fee on this move is to be believed, Manchester United just got themselves a pretty solid bargain here. 

Buttner won't be expected to come in and play the majority of Manchester United's matches, but he will be a nice option behind Patrice Evra at left back.

Plus, with Phil Jones, Chris Smalling, and Rio Ferdinand all currently injured—Michael Carrick and Antonio Valencia started on the back line against Everton, for heaven's sake—Buttner should get some solid playing time early in this campaign.

But this is as much a move for the future as it is for the present. Buttner will look to pair with either Fabio or Rafael Silva in the future at the fullback positions, an intriguing trio of defenders for Manchester United fans to keep an eye on moving forward.

No, this is far from the biggest signing for Man U this summer. But given the team's current state on the back line, Buttner will certainly be a welcome face for the Red Devils.
