WWE: Why John Cena Needs CM Punk

Michael GuadalupeJun 7, 2018

John Cena needs CM Punk.  Without Punk, Cena would go back to his bland, unstoppable gimmick.

Punk is a wall that Cena cannot pass.  He pushes Cena to the next level and gives the fans a chance to see Cena lose.  (Yes, Super Cena has not held the WWE title since last year, and that's a good thing.)

Cena needs CM Punk because without CM Punk, he would continue to be stale, bland and overworked.

The Rivalry

One of the biggest reasons why Cena needs Punk is because of the rivalry these two have going.

When Punk was on the verge of leaving the company, we saw some of the best mic work in the ring as these two clashed.  Now we have another chance to see Cena and Punk go at it again, especially after what happened this past Monday night on Raw.

The rivalry between Punk and Cena is good for both wrestlers, however, it benefits Cena more.

Punk has had great feuds with Daniel Bryan and Chris Jericho since winning the title last year, while Cena had lackluster feuds with John Laurinaitis and Big Show.

Punk takes Cena to another level both inside the ring and on the mic.  These two shine when they get on the mic and assault one another.  Cena is one of the best wrestlers when it comes to promos, so when he has to go toe-to-toe with someone like Punk, he has to be at his best.

Inside the ring, Punk takes Cena to another level as well.  Not only are the matches between Punk and Cena solid, but Punk takes Cena out of his comfort zone.

Cena’s recent matches against Big Show, for example, are all very similar, almost predictable.  When Cena goes against Punk, though, he has to be willing to expect anything.  Even when these two were recent tag team partners, Cena attempted Punk's running knee move.

It was sloppy, but it was something Cena tried because of his rivalry with Punk.

Super Cena Looks Human

Cena can be beaten by CM Punk, which is not a bad thing.  One of the biggest problems with John Cena is how he always manages to overcome every opponent (besides The Rock).  Cena always manages to defend or retake his WWE title.

Except for last year, when Punk beat him for the title.

It's not a bad thing to make Cena look like he can be beaten.  In fact, it helps improve his character.  One of the biggest issues with Cena is how he talks about how he has to battle to overcome obstacles, but he never really does.

Did he overcome anything with his recent feud with Big Show?

It was obvious Cena was going to get the win against Show at No Way Out, so what exactly did he have to overcome?

Cena losing to Punk gives him something to overcome.  Punk stands in Cena's way and is a true challenge to the Doctor of Thuganomics.  Punk makes Cena seem like he can lose, which makes Cena’s talk of rising above hate and overcoming difficulties much more real.

If Punk decides to name Cena the No. 1 contender and manages to beat him at Night of Champions, then not only will John Cena seem less like Superman and more like an actual wrestler, but he will have an opponent who would be a true challenge for the 10-time former champion.

The Possibility to Do Other Things

With CM Punk around, John Cena can worry about other things, both in and outside of the ring.  Cena no longer needs to carry the entire company on his shoulders.  Instead of constantly needing to be the focus of the WWE title scene, he can be used for other things like we have seen so far this year.

Punk allows the company’s focus to be split between two main-eventers.  Punk also freed up Cena this year to take on a bigger role—going up against Brock Lesnar at Extreme Rules.

Punk being around—and being extremely popular—also opens up the opportunity for Cena to take time off if he ever needed to.  If Cena were to go down to injury, Punk would be there to fill in the gap.

It's always hard to keep the ball rolling when a wrestler like Cena goes down to injury, but having Punk become such a main-eventer over the last year gives WWE some breathing room.

Punk makes Cena a better wrestler and brings him to another level, which is exactly why Cena needs him.
