Knicks Rumors: Should New York Make More Free Agent Moves?

Alex KayMay 31, 2018

The New York Knicks had a subpar offseason in 2012.

As a result of some poor decision-making by the front office, the Knicks' roster is largely unchanged from the lockout-shortened 2011-12 campaign.

Instead of re-signing the only affordable star on the roster, New York opted to let Jeremy Lin walk as a restricted free agent after the Houston Rockets offered a three-year, $25.1 million deal.

Now, a team that finished just above .500 (36-30) and barely earned a No. 7 seed in the conference last season seems poised to remain mostly the same.

When Carmelo Anthony, Amar’e Stoudemire and Tyson Chandler are the focal points, this normally shouldn’t be an issue.

It would seem that the team would get more consistent over time, but that hasn’t been the case yet and there is no reason to think it will just magically happen.

The bottom line is the Knicks need help and they blew their chances to bring in an impact player this summer. They let a sensational young PG that helped the squad gel just walk away.

So should New York give up hope and stop playing the free-agent market?

Probably.

There simply aren’t any worthwhile FAs available and, according to Jared Zwerling of ESPN New York, it seems at least one agent believes the Knickerbockers are going to remain pat.

One of the only moves even being whispered amongst insiders is a potential signing of Tony Taylor Jr. The unheralded PG has been somewhat impressive in summer league play, but it’s doubtful he’d ever make a difference during the regular season.

The Knicks must prepare to go to war with the pieces they have in place and hope they can get a lucky break this year via trade or a buyout casualty.

It’s just not worth it to keep playing the barren free-agent market.
