Ryan Tannehill Named Starting QB by Dolphins Coach Joe Philbin

Ryan RudnanskyAug 20, 2012

Rookie quarterback Ryan Tannehill has been named the Miami Dolphins' starting quarterback for Week 1 by head coach Joe Philbin, according to Armando Salguero of the Miami Herald.

Salguero tweeted on Monday:

Ben Volin of the Palm Beach Post added this little tidbit following the news:

"

Tannehill, who wears No. 17, will be the #Dolphins 17th starting QB since Marino retired

— Ben Volin (@BenVolinPBP) August 20, 2012"

Tannehill had been battling primarily with veteran David Garrard and Matt Moore for the starting spot, but Garrard's knee surgery left Moore as the top competition.

Tannehill went 14-of-21 for 167 yards and a touchdown against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the Dolphins' preseason opener, but went just 11-of-23 for 100 yards against the Carolina Panthers in Friday's exhibition game.

On the other hand, he was sacked three times on Friday, and the Dolphins are still waiting for some receivers to emerge to the front after Chad Johnson's dismissal from the team.

Tannehill was selected No. 8 overall by the Dolphins in the 2012 NFL draft after soaring up draft boards following his final season with Texas A&M. Last season, Tannehill passed for over 3,700 yards while tossing 29 touchdowns to 15 interceptions.

Helping Tannehill's cause has been Moore's poor play in the Dolphins' first two exhibition games. Moore has combined to go 12-of-27 for 136 yards and an interception this preseason. Despite showing some promise with the Dolphins last season, Moore has failed to distinguish himself this summer.

Tannehill will attempt to lead the Dolphins after a disappointing 6-10 campaign last season marred by poor quarterback play. The 24-year-old aims to prove he was worth a top-10 pick in this year's NFL draft.
