WWE Summerslam 2012 Results: CM Punk's Title Retention Should Not Be a Shock
CM Punk retained his WWE championship in an exciting match at Sunday evening's SummerSlam, but who couldn't see this coming?
This match was built up in odd fashion following Punk's heel turn at Raw 1000, and the WWE had to do something to make up for the lull that followed that surprising turn of events.
Having Punk retain the title in Sunday night's Triple-Threat match was the only thing that made sense. It was the entire point of having Punk turn heel on Raw, and anything else would have been a waste.

Think about this as well. Punk's victory on Sunday pushed him past John Cena in the length of his title run. Having him do so in head-to-head fashion was a brilliant idea by the WWE's powers that be.
The match itself was actually more exciting than I anticipated. Big Show started off the match by dominating both Cena and Punk, before the quicker competitors began to take over. Every time you thought Punk or Cena were about to take control, Show's massive hands would hit someone.
That's how most of Show's matches go, and the progression remained familiar as well.
The match almost ended when Big Show toppled onto Cena from the second turnbuckle, but Punk broke up the pinfall by landing on Show's back. Eventually he wound up winning what appeared to be a controversial win by throwing his vice grip onto Big show, but there was discrepancy in the ultimate winner.
Punk didn't slow down though. After a restart he eventually threw Cena out of the ring, covered Show and retained his WWE title.
I know I skipped some of the match's finer details, but that's not the point. Not only did the WWE give Punk his title, but they did so in grand fashion. The drama in this match hit a higher pitch than I anticipated, and it wound up being extremely exciting to watch.
Punk's reign could end soon. In fact I think it will, but the WWE made sure they etched his name next to the rest of their recent superstars with Sunday night's win.
After his massive heel turn at Raw 1000 this couldn't have gone any other way.
