WWE SummerSlam 2012 Card: CM Punk Set Up for Victory

Ryan RudnanskyAug 18, 2012

John Cena has been a WWE champion a record 10 times and Big Show isn't enough of a draw to win SummerSlam.

That is why everything's set up for CM Punk to retain his title on Sunday at the Staples Center in Los Angeles.

Punk's victory would complete his heel turn and allow the WWE to use him, and general manager AJ Lee, in various ways. Punk would inevitably go on to have a full calendar of events with plenty of high-profile matches, boosting him into a bad guy. AJ Lee could either go along for the ride or get canned in dramatic fashion.

There are simply more concoctions for the WWE to whip up with Punk emerging victorious. You have to believe Punk's character has been changing ever so slightly for an opportunity like this. And with the WWE always looking for new (and sometimes ineffective) ways of drawing appeal, Punk makes the most sense.

But it goes beyond Punk being an intriguing character.

In the same breath, Big Show and Cena have worn out their welcome. Cena has won too many times and frankly, Big Show is not exciting enough.

Cena is not the same popular figure he used to be. Some have grown tired of him, and that's evident the second he walks out of the tunnel. The roar from the crowd has waned, interspersed with indifference.

And, really, do we want Cena to win again? Punk may not be the greatest solution for the WWE, but he's certainly going to make things more interesting.

If Punk doesn't win on Sunday, I would be shocked.

Then again, the WWE has disappointed before.
