One Player from Each NHL Team Who Must Rebound from Crummy 2011-12 Season
The 2012-13 NHL season not only signifies the start of a new season, but a fresh start for all the players in the league. Not every player had a memorable and stellar 2011-12 campaign, so these players must rebound from a crummy 2011-12 season.
If the lockout doesn't cancel or delay the start of the 2012-13 season, here is a list of one player from each team that needs to rebound in 2012-13.
Anaheim Ducks: Ryan Getzlaf
1 of 30Ryan Getzlaf had a subpar 2011-12 season. In 82 games, he scored 11 goals and assisted on 46 others for 57 points. This was a huge down year for Anaheim's star center because in 2010-11, Getzlaf tallied 76 points in only 67 games.
Getzlaf is a free agent after this season, so expect him to put his nose to the grind so he can maximize his value for the upcoming offseason.
Boston Bruins: Gregory Campbell
2 of 30Gregory Campbell had a solid 2010-11 campaign when the Boston Bruins won the Stanley Cup. He scored 29 points in 80 games. Last season, Campbell only managed to put up 16 points and he had a minus-three rating.
Campbell will definitely look to rebound in 2012-13.
Buffalo Sabres: Ville Leino
3 of 30Ville Leino cashed in on a 53-point season in 2010-11 with the Philadelphia Flyers when he signed a mega deal with the Buffalo Sabres.
The Sabres thought they were adding a top scorer but Leino turned out to bust in 2011-12. Leino only scored 25 points and that is something he will need to rebound from in 2012-13.
Calgary Flames: Jay Bouwmeester
4 of 30Jay Bouwmeester is a player that really needs to rebound from a crummy 2011-12 season. He is an overpaid defenseman who only scored 29 points last season. His salary could force the Flames to consider dealing him if he can no longer be a significant offensive contributor.
Carolina Hurricanes: Alex Semin
5 of 30Alex Semin signed a fat one-year-contract worth $7 million and he has a lot to prove in Carolina. He is coming off back-to-back 54-point seasons and he is being paid a lot of money to produce.
Semin may find himself in the KHL if he can't rebound in 2012-13 because no one will pay him the money Carolina did this offseason when you look at the 2013 free-agent class.
Chicago Blackhawks: Andrew Brunette
6 of 30Andrew Brunette went from scoring 46 points in 2010-11 to scoring 28 points in 2011-12. Brunette experienced a decline in ice time with the Chicago Blackhawks but he will look to rebound in 2012-13 .
Brunette is still an unsigned free agent, but with all the CBA uncertainty, it is understandable that league veterans are still wallowing in free agency.
Colorado Avalanche: Milan Hejduk
7 of 30Milan Hejduk is a veteran Colorado Avalanche forward who is entering the down end of his career. He dipped from 56 points in 2010-11 to 37 points in 2011-12, but he was re-signed after his contract expired this season.
Hejduk is a veteran leader who will help mentor the younger players on the Avs but he will look to rebound next season.
Columbus Blue Jackets: Brandon Dubinsky
8 of 30Brandon Dubinsky is one of the newest Columbus Blue Jacket forwards and he is a player that will look to rebound in 2012-13.
Dubinsky had his worst year offensively with the New York Rangers in 2011-12 and he was the subject of trade rumors all year long until he was dealt to Columbus for Rick Nash.
Dubinsky is a solid defensive forward, but Columbus is hoping that last year was simply a down offensive year for their newest forward.
Dallas Stars: Stephane Robidas
9 of 30Stephane Robidas had a second-consecutive down year with the Dallas Stars. Robidas had 22 points in 2011-12 and was a minus-five. It was a dip from his 30 point campaign in 2010-11 and a dip from 41 points in 2009-10.
Robidas is getting older now but he will look to stop the slide in production during the the 2012-13 season.
Detroit Red Wings: Tomas Holmstrom
10 of 30Tomas Holmstrom is an aging veteran and an iconic Detroit Red Wing. He played one more game in 2011-12 than he did in 2010-11 and he still finished with 13 less points.
Holmstrom is nearing the end of his career, but if he returns for one more year with the Red Wings, he will want to have a great year so he can go out on a good note.
Edmonton Oilers: Ales Hemsky
11 of 30Ales Hemsky played in 69 games with the Edmonton Oilers during the 2011-12 season and he registered 36 points. The year before, Hemsky appeared in only 47 games because of injuries but he still contributed 42 points.
Hemsky had a very down year and considering he signed a fat new contract, he needs to rebound in 2012-13.
Florida Panthers: Tomas Kopecky
12 of 30Tomas Kopecky had a down year with the Florida Panthers. In one less game played than the year before, Kopecky had 10 less points overall.
Kopecky is still young and has room to improve, but he would like to improve from the year before.
Los Angeles Kings: Dustin Penner
13 of 30Dustin Penner had as crummy of a year as a player can have. He had 17 points after scoring 45 points the year before.
Penner went through a nasty divorce and it easy to see how his mind wasn't completely on hockey. However, Penner really turned it on during the playoffs and redeemed himself.
Penner is a talented power forward who should really rebound in 2012-13.
Minnesota Wild: Dany Heatley
14 of 30Dany Heatley had a down first year with the Minnesota Wild. He dipped from scoring 64 points with the San Jose Sharks in 2010-11 to scoring only 53 with the Wild in 2011-12.
Heatley was once considered one of the league's top players but his production has dipped significantly from his 85-100-point seasons in Ottawa,
Dany Heatley is a player who will look to bounce back season with new linemate Zach Parise.
Montreal Canadiens: Scott Gomez
15 of 30Scott Gomez was injured during a good part of the 2011-12 season, but he is a player who had a crummy season. He is a center whose career took a sharp decline in recent years for unexplainable reasons.
Gomez has a fat contract and really needs to turn it around before he finds himself bought out or in the AHL.
Nashville Predators: Andrei Kostitsyn
16 of 30Andrei Kostitsyn had a down year with the Nashville Predators/Montreal Canadiens.
Kostitsyn was floundering with the Canadiens and he was eventually reunited with his brother Sergei in Nashville. Once in Nashville, Andrei started to become a solid contributor but he still had a down year overall.
Andrei will definitely look to rebound in 2012-13.
New Jersey Devils: Bryce Salvador
17 of 30Bryce Salvador did not have a crummy season but he is a player who wants to rebound from this past season. Salvador missed the entire 2010-11 season because of injury and returned to play a full 2011-12 season.
Salvador had a subpar regular season and an above average postseason, earning a new contract for his efforts.
If Salvador can channel his success from the playoffs for 82 games next year, he will rebound in 2012-13 in a big way.
New York Islanders: Michael Grabner
18 of 30Michael Grabner scored 34 goals and assisted on 18 others for 52 points in 2010-11 but played in two more games in 2011-12 and had 20 less points.
Grabner is a speedster with a solid shot and release, but he had a down year in 2011-12. If he can use his shot and be more sure of himself when he has the puck, he should be able to turn it around in 2012-13.
New York Rangers: Brian Boyle
19 of 30The two New York Ranger forwards that had the biggest down years were traded to the Columbus Blue Jackets, so Brian Boyle was next on the list.
Boyle had a great 2010-11 season in which he scored 21 goals and 35 points. Boyle regressed slightly and scored 11 goals and 26 points in 2011-12 but he was one of the Rangers' best players early on in the playoffs.
Boyle will look to rebound in 2012-13 and get back to the 20-goal mark because he wasn't as offensively effective in 2011-12.
Ottawa Senators: Kyle Turris
20 of 30Kyle Turris is a talented young center who didn't want to play for the Phoenix Coyotes and ended up on the Ottawa Senators. Once he was in Ottawa, Turris started to shine.
He didn't play a complete season and he had 29 points but now that he is in Ottawa, expect him to rebound in a huge way during the 2012-13 season.
Philadelphia Flyers: Ilya Bryzgalov
21 of 30Ilya Bryzgalov had a rough first year with the Philadelphia Flyers. He was hot and cold for most of the years and melted down during the playoffs.
The Philadelphia Flyers defense is already in shambles because of injury so Bryzgalov is going to need to rebound in a huge way for the Flyers in 2012-13.
Phoenix Coyotes: Mikkel Boedker
22 of 30Mikkel Boedker has been in and out of the NHL and AHL the past few seasons. He finally got his first full stint with the Phoenix Coyotes and he only tallied 24 points.
Boedker has the speed and instincts to be a solid two-way forward and he would like to rebound in 2012-13. With Ray Whitney no longer on the team, someone will need to step up and Boedker can be that player.
Pittsburgh Penguins: Tyler Kennedy
23 of 30There were not many players on the Pittsburgh Penguins who had down years, but Tyler Kennedy was one of them.
Kennedy didn't play in all 82 games because of injury and because of this, he will look to rebound and have a complete 82 game season in 2012-13.
His 33 points in 60 games were decent but when he is healthy in 2012-13, Kennedy will have a great bounce back year.
San Jose Sharks: Ryane Clowe
24 of 30Ryane Clowe had a significant dip in production during the 2011-12 season. The San Jose Sharks' rugged power forward had 45 points and was a minus-five in 2011-12. This was a dip for Clowe after recording 62 points and a plus-13 rating in 2010-11.
Clowe is an impending free agent and look for him to improve in order to maximize his value and the amount of money he can earn on the free-agent market.
St.Louis Blues: Chris Stewart
25 of 30Chris Stewart had a down year with the St.Louis Blues and took a slight cut in pay when he re-signed with the team.
Stewart has 30 points in 79 after tallying 53 in 62 games the year prior. If Stewart doesn't rebound in 2012-13, he may find himself on a new team in 2013-14.
Tampa Bay Lightning: Vincent Lecavalier
26 of 30There is no doubt that Vincent Lecavalier is a talented player. He has been the captain of the Tampa Bay Lightning for quite some time and won a Cup with Tampa Bay in 2003-04. However, he has failed to perform after signing a new contract.
Lecavalier had 49 points last season, he had 54 the year before that and in 2009-10 he had 70 points. Vinny L is really starting to decline in play and he needs to rebound in a big way during the 2012-13 season.
Toronto Maple Leafs: Mike Komisarek
27 of 30Mike Komisarek has not lived up to his contract in the slightest way since joining the Toronto Maple Leafs.
He had five points last season and he has had a grand total of 19 points the last three seasons. Komisarek really needs to rebound because he isn't doing his fair share.
Vancouver Canucks: Ryan Kesler
28 of 30Ryan Kesler played in 77 games during the 2011-12 season and scored 22 goals and 49 points. That was a significant drop from his 41-goal and 73-point campaign in 2010-11.
The Canucks' forward did battle injury, but he was able to play a significant portion of the regular season.
Kesler is a solid two-way forward and he will need to bounce back in 2012-13.
Washington Capitals: Alex Ovechkin
29 of 30Alex Ovechkin is one of the NHL's top snipers but he had a significant decline in production. Ovechkin had 65 points in 2011-12 and it was a significant decline from the 85 points he contributed in 2010-11.
Oveckhin has significantly decreased in overall production the last few seasons and he needs to stop this trend soon.
Winnipeg Jets: Nik Antropov
30 of 30Nik Antropov has really regressed significantly the past few years. It was only three years ago that Antropov had a 67-point campaign. Last year, Antropov only scored 35 points and he only took 95 shots.
Antropov used to be a solid two-way forward but he isn't the player he once was. For that reason, Antropov will look to rebound in 2012-13.
