Fantasy Football Rankings 2012: Top Breakout WR Candidates of Next Season

Ryan RudnanskyJun 7, 2018

As we head into the 2012-2013 NFL season, there are a few receivers worth keeping an eye on in your fantasy football leagues.

Several receivers showed promise last season as rookies, but have yet to truly break out in the National Football League.

Whether you are looking for a receiver likely to rack up a lot of catches or someone who will score his fair share of touchdowns, here's a look at some wideouts you should target this fantasy football campaign.

Torrey Smith, Baltimore Ravens

The speedy Torrey Smith racked up 841 receiving yards and seven touchdowns in his rookie campaign last season, accentuated by his performances against the St. Louis Rams and Cincinnati Bengals in Weeks 3 and 11, respectively.

Against the Rams, Smith exploded for 152 yards and three touchdowns. Against the Bengals, he added 165 yards and a touchdown.

Despite Cam Cameron's conservative play-calling, Smith is simply too explosive an athlete to receive under 100 targets in 2012-2013 (he had 95 last season).

Demaryius Thomas, Denver Broncos

Despite rupturing an Achilles before last season, Demaryius Thomas emerged with a touchdown right off the bat in Week 7.

Thomas went on to be a trusted target for Tim Tebow in Denver, racking up 144 yards and two touchdowns against the Minnesota Vikings in Week 13 and 116 yards against the New England Patriots in Week 15.

You may remember that he also scored the game-winning touchdown in overtime against the Pittsburgh Steelers in the playoffs.

Did I mention Peyton Manning is throwing to him this season?

Eric Decker, Denver Broncos

Like Thomas, Eric Decker has Manning tossing him the pigskin this season.

He also racked up 612 yards and eight touchdowns last season, including a 113-yard, two-touchdown performance against the Cincinnati Bengals in Week 2.

The difference between Decker and Thomas is that Decker is a better route runner. That should distance himself from the rest of the receivers under Manning. We all know how much Manning values route-running.

Decker is another guy whose targets should skyrocket this season.
