United States Soccer: After Win over Mexico, What's Next for USMNT?

Joe TanseyJun 3, 2018

Now that American soccer fans have had almost 24 hours to let the United States win over Mexico at Estadio Azteca sink in, it is time to look forward.

After the not-so-friendly match with their rivals to the south, the United States men's national team has to avoid the hangover from the win and take on a few bigger challenges.

In the past year, we have learned that Jurgen Klinsmann is the right man for the job, but the next few months will show just how much the squad has improved under the former German international.

Here are the next and final four steps this calendar year on the United States' road to Brazil and the 2014 World Cup.

Home and Home Matches with Jamaica in September

1 of 4

As it stands right now, the United States sit atop Group A in the third round of CONCACAF World Cup qualifying.

The Americans have four points in the group after a win over Antigua and Barbuda and a draw at Guatemala.

Next up in group play is Jamaica.

In early September, Klinsmann and company will head to Kingston for a match on the 7th before hosting their Group A rivals four days later in Columbus, Ohio.

Jamaica look to be the United States' biggest threat in Group A so far, as they also have four points from two games.

Look for Klinsmann to bring Michael Bradley, Clint Dempsey and Carlos Bocanegra back into the squad for these two matches.

After these two matches, American fans will have a better idea of where their team stands in the group, which should be first place.

Look for the team to get at least four points out of these matches, with a draw on the road being the worst expected result.

October Match Away at Antigua and Barbuda

2 of 4

After the two matches with Jamaica, the United States team has a month off before another Group A match.

On October 12, the U.S. will travel to Sir Vivian Richards Stadium in North Sound to take on the team they beat 3-1 back in June.

If all goes well against Jamaica in September, Klinsmann could be able to give some regular starters a rest.

This game may feature more of the players that played against Mexico.

Players like Brek Shea, Terrence Boyd, Geoff Cameron, Kyle Beckerman and even Brad Guzan or Nick Rimando in net may be on the pitch that night.

Final Third-Round Qualifying Match Against Guatemala

3 of 4

One of the lowest points of Klinsmann's time in charge of the United States was the 1-1 draw back in June on the road at Guatemala.

On October 16th, the Americans will get a chance to avenge that loss at Livestrong Sporting Park in Kansas City.

The United States should already have qualified for the final round of World Cup qualifying at this stage.

If that is the case, this match could be one to give inexperienced MLS players not involved in the league's playoff race or lower-level players based in Europe a chance to play.

Players like Sacha Kljestan, Joe Corona, Jose Torres and DaMarcus Beasley could be a part of this squad, as Klinsmann will look to avoid the chance of having one of his stars like Dempsey getting injured in a meaningless match.

Friendly Against Russia

4 of 4

On November 14th, the United States will play an experienced European side in Russia.

The site of the match is still to be determined.

The match against Russia will be one of the first looks American fans will have of the new Russian squad, now under the management of Fabio Capello.

Russia will have just four matches with Capello as their manager before they take on the Americans.

American fans will also get to take a close-up look of players like Alan Dzagoev and many more talented Russians as Capello's squad aims to get younger.
