WWE SummerSlam 2012: Why CM Punk Will Retain His Title

Just a few weeks ago on the 1,000th edition of WWE Monday Night Raw, The Rock made another appearance and challenged CM Punk to a potential match at next year's Royal Rumble pay-per-view for the championship belt.

Although it is uncertain whether Punk will actually be in the spotlight at that time, I fully expect the reigning champion to retain the WWE title at the SummerSlam pay-per-view against John Cena and the Big Show.

Last year's long feud between The Rock and Cena was an unforgettable one to watch. To see the Rock once again defeat Cena for the WWE Championship at the Royal Rumble event would be devastating to Cena's career. Cena is indeed WWE's top wrestler on the roster. Although I would praise WWE if they turned Cena into a heel character, his role right now is the best fit for his career. 

Losing once more to The Rock would put Cena's career on the line for many reasons, the biggest of which is Cena not being able to win the biggest match of his career.

As for the Big Show, I believe his time as a viable WWE champion is running out, but he does indeed still carry value to WWE. He is a massive figure in the ring and has had plenty of success in the past. However, the Big Show should not have his hand raised at the end of the three-way match. What he does add to the match is star power and it will be interesting to see if Punk and Cena will team up together to knock him out early on.

Punk should score the victory in this match because of the potential feud he could see with The Rock. It would be an interesting, but not so good, decision for WWE to place the title on Cena or the Big Show.

At this stage, Punk offers the most value to WWE.

With the Royal Rumble months away, if Punk were to win Sunday night, WWE can begin its storyline feud with the reigning champion and The Rock. Punk has the ability to be a very strong and popular heel character with many wrestling fans. Adding The Rock to that will make it a feud that has much potential.

WWE SummerSlam should be one of the most exciting pay-per-view events to watch in 2012.
