WWE SummerSlam 2012 Results: Chris Jericho Defeats Dolph Ziggler

Of all the results that could have been predicted for this SummerSlam match, Chris Jericho defeating Dolph Ziggler was the last one that I would have come up. 

Yet here we are, with the biggest event of the summer taking place in Los Angeles, and Jericho went over Ziggler. 

It's not that this is the worst result in the history of wrestling. It's not even the worst result in a WWE match this year (my vote for that would still go to John Cena defeating Brock Lesnar at Extreme Rules, for a variety of reasons). 

But everyone knows that Jericho's current tenure with WWE is coming to an end very soon. His band Fozzy has a brand new album that just came out, and Jericho is going on tour with them for a few months. 

In wrestling, when you are leaving, the logical booking decision would have the person who is staying go over. In the case of Jericho, the fact that he is a legitimate star who could have helped Ziggler's push makes this decision that much more baffling. 

Ziggler is one of the most interesting cases in recent WWE history. It is obvious the company likes him, but trying to figure out how much is going to make your head spin. He won a guaranteed title shot at the Money In the Bank pay-per-view last month, yet he has really done nothing substantial before or after that win. 

SummerSlam could have been the start of something big for Ziggler. It could have been the event where he takes the next step in his development as a star. 

Instead, WWE used it as an opportunity to put over a soon-to-be departing star who didn't need the rub anyway.
