Chelsea Transfer News: Blues Foolish to Consider Ending Pursuit of Cavani, Hulk

Patrick ClarkeAug 15, 2012

Chelsea are foolish to consider pulling out of the race to acquire world-class strikers Edinson Cavani and Hulk this summer.

According to the Daily Mail's Sami Mokbel, "Chelsea are refusing to be held to ransom in their pursuit of long-term targets Edinson Cavani and Hulk."

Although both strikers have hefty price tags attached to them, there is no excuse for the Blues not to at least go after one of them full force.

According to Mokbel, Cavani would cost Chelsea £35 million in transfer fees and would want to be paid £150,000 per week during his time at Stamford Bridge. Meanwhile, Chelsea would need to put up £38 million to bring over Hulk from Porto.

Still, adding a piece up front like Cavani or Hulk would provide a mighty boost to a team that prepares to trek forward without elite scorer Didier Drogba.

Hulk is just 26, and Cavani is only 25, so it's not as if Chelsea is making a risky investment in either forward.

Both players have proven they can score consistently, especially Cavani, who has 49 goals in 68 appearances with Napoli since 2010. He also has 11 goals for the Uruguayan senior national team since 2008.

On the other hand, Hulk has scored 52 goals in 96 appearances for Porto dating back to 2008.

Neither player is being overvalued. They are both extremely talented and capable of taking Chelsea to the next level in the English Premier League this coming season.

Although acquiring both superstars would be nearly impossible for Chelsea from a financial standpoint, giving up pursuit of both South American prospects is just as puzzling.

Sure, Chelsea is looking to get both players for less, but that just won't happen. They have proven themselves for far too long in the sport, and will make the money they demand somewhere else, if not at Stamford Bridge.

The Blues are foolish to consider dropping out of the race for Cavani and Hulk. If they hope to repeat as European champions in 2013, the club would dig a little deeper for the talent they desperately need.
