Shabazz Muhammad Reportedly Won't Travel to China Due to NCAA Investigation

Adam WellsJun 7, 2018

Shabazz Muhammad, the top-ranked high school basketball recruit in the country, who was set to play for UCLA this season, will not be with the team when it travels to China for an exhibition because of an NCAA investigation, according to a report in the Los Angeles Times:

"

The NCAA investigation is reportedly investigating financial dealings between Muhammad’s family and friends.

NCAA officials have spoken with Muhammad, but have yet to talk with his family. The decision was made to have Muhammad  stay home while the investigation is in progress, the source said.

"

This decision does not come as a complete surprise, as there have been whispers about Muhammad's eligibility since before he decided to take his talents to UCLA.

Jeff Goodman and Gary Parrish of CBS Sports reported that Muhammad was going to have a few red flags "that could compromise Muhammad's amateur status."

Muhammad was the prize in a sterling recruiting class for UCLA and head coach Ben Howland. In addition to landing Muhammad, who was the best player coming out of high schools, according to Rivals, the Bruins also landed the No. 3 player, Kyle Anderson.

The powerful duo is expected to bring the Bruins back to prominence this season, but Muhammad's status, depending on which direction it goes, could put a huge dent into those plans.
