Mexico vs. USA: International Friendly Is a Statement Game for Americans

Nicholas GossJun 7, 2018

When the United States meets Mexico in an international friendly on Wednesday, the American squad will need to make a statement to prove that it is still a force to be reckoned with in North America.

The United States has been one of the best teams in North America since manager Jurgen Klinsmann took over the team last season, but Mexico has been a very difficult opponent for the Americans throughout their history.

After failing even to qualify for the Summer Olympics, the Americans have to prove they are still a team to be feared in international competition.

This match with Mexico will show the players, coaches and fans exactly where the team is at before it undergoes its 2014 World Cup-qualifying campaign later this year.

Not only would a win be a tremendous accomplishment for the United States, but it would also give Team USA its first ever victory at the Azteca Stadium, which is a place at which Mexico has dominated the Americans many times in recent years.

Since Clint Dempsey and other top stars such as Landon Donovan won't be on the squad for the Mexico match, Klinsmann will have a fantastic opportunity to see how the team's young players react to the pressure of playing in a hostile environment against a very good team.

This is a statement game for the United States. The U.S. has to qualify for the World Cup, and winning this match would give Team USA an enormous confidence boost going forward.

The Americans haven't beaten Mexico since 2009, so there is plenty of motivation for the Americans to win, as they look to pull off a massive upset in Mexico City.
