Liverpool Transfer Rumors: How Selling Daniel Agger Would Benefit Reds

David DanielsJun 7, 2018

Sometimes you must sacrifice to get better.

According to Liverpool transfer rumors, the Reds have a predicament: they boast promising young talent, but not enough to compete with the Premier League bosses. That could change if they make moves this transfer window, but to make moves you must have money. And that’s why selling Daniel Agger is worth the transaction if it nets them Cristian Tello and Nuri Sahin.

Mirror Football reported that, while Agger would prefer to play in Merseyside this season, he knows the matter is out of his hands. The 27-year old defender said:

"

I can't imagine playing for any other club in England but you never know if the club think it's better to sell. I'd rather stay but that decision is not up to me at the moment. Liverpool can do a deal even though I have two years on my contract, but I haven't changed my mind on the subject.

When healthy, Agger is a solid footballer, but does Liverpool actually have the cash after last summer’s spending spree to keep him and outbid Arsenal for Tello and Sahin?

Highly unlikely.

The Daily Mail reported that the Reds are indeed in hot pursuit of the young talents. However, according to Chris Bascombe of The Telegraph and Paul Doyle of The Guardian, the Gunners are as well.

Arsene Wenger has shown no hesitation to improve Arsenal this transfer window with high-profile signings that include Olivier Giroud, Lukas Podolski and Santi Cazorla. If he believes his acquisitions are winning Robin van Persie over, he won’t stop.

The most sure-fire way to lock up Tello and Sahin is to throw more money at them than the Gunners do. Selling Agger (hopefully for the Reds sake, to anyone other than Manchester City) would give them a shot to do just that without setting themselves up for a future of empty pockets.
