2012 NFL Predictions: Carolina Panthers and More Shocking 10-Win Teams

Alex KayAug 14, 2012

With the kickoff of the 2012 NFL season just around the corner, it’s time to start making some bold predictions on which teams will come out of nowhere to win 10-plus games and make the playoffs.

Each season, without fail, a number of franchises experience a renaissance and completely outperform their low expectations (see the 2011-12 San Francisco 49ers).

Here are three squads that have a real chance to shock the world this year after having a subpar 2011 campaign.

Carolina Panthers

While Cam Newton was the No. 1 pick last year, few believed he would have the record-breaking season that he did.

Now that he’s got another training camp under his belt, the Rookie of the Year is poised to lead this team to greatness. Newton should be able to win some games that were extremely close—like the Packers and Saints matchups last year—and show even more poise in the pocket to go along with his terrific running ability.

The defense—the Achilles heel of Carolina last season—is much improved via free agency and the draft. They added an elite LB in Luke Kuechly, a solid DE in Frank Alexander and a sleeper CB in Josh Norman.

Impact players like Jon Beason and Thomas Davis are also back and healthy after being injured.

Expect this team to easily win 10 games and make some noise in the playoffs.

The Seahawks are one of the most underrated teams in the NFL playing in one of the worst divisions. As mentioned, the 49ers came out of the NFC West last season and made a run to the conference championship.

While Seattle may not go as deep as San Fran, the fans can certainly get their hopes up for at least a playoff appearance.

Their defense is good enough to carry them to a number of wins—ranking in the top 10 last year and only getting better in the offseason.

The offense is much improved—especially at the QB position—with the addition of Matt Flynn and Russell Wilson. Marshawn Lynch should continue to be a beast on the ground and put the team on his back.

Should Seattle put it all together, this squad is going to win more games than a lot of people have them pegged for.

Kansas City Chiefs

The Chiefs can legitimately win the AFC West, perhaps the most unpredictable division in all of the National Football League.

Considering Oakland is always an enigma, San Diego is hard to trust and Denver is going to have some growing pains under Peyton Manning, K.C. could sneakily put together a 10-win campaign.

They added some nice pieces like Payton Hillis to complement their running game, Matt Cassel is a solid game manager and the defense isn’t too shabby.

If the Broncos fail to live up to expectations and San Diego disappoints once again, the Chiefs will be back in the postseason.
