Manchester United Transfer News: United Will Still Invest in Squad
Manchester United chief executive David Gill has given a strong indication that the club will continue to spend throughout the summer transfer window, as they look to boost the squad for the upcoming English Premier League season.
The Red Devils captured the signature of both Shinji Kagawa and Nick Powell, but after failing to land several of their transfer targets so far including Lucas Moura or Leighton Baines, many had wondered whether Old Trafford still had the same pull as it did several years ago (per Goal).
Arsenal striker Robin van Persie is rumored to be the club's top transfer priority now, with Gill and manager Sir Alex Ferguson reportedly missing the Red Devils' preseason fixture so that they could wrap a deal with the 29-year-old (per ESPN Soccernet).
That report has seemingly gained further credence, after Gill commented via The Daily Postย that United would continue to spend this summerโas well as long-termโif it helped the squad grow and perform better in domestic and European competitions.
""We fully understand and the owners fully understand that what happens on the pitch is crucial to us and we will make sure there are sufficient funds to invest in the team going forward.
The level of debt that weโve had at the club since theyโve taken over hasnโt impacted on what weโve done as a team.ย Weโve won four Premier Leagues, weโve been to the Champions League final three times, weโve had ongoing success on the pitch."
"
Gill's comments also come after Manchester United's disappointing start to their quest to raise money in the United States. The club's share price on the New York Stock Exchange simply didn't get the movement that many had expected, and must have left some wondering what the future holds for United.
Well, it seems that the future holds the same as it always has for Unitedโquality signings in the transfer window and a thirst for excellence and results on the pitch.
Manchester United will no doubt be a threat in the English Premier League this season, and with Gill's confidence that they will spending more over the summer transfer window, could definitely increase those title chances even further.
Is it Robin van Persie? Is it Leighton Baines?
Only time will tell.
What do you make of United's spending so far this summer?
