Jose Aldo vs. Frankie Edgar Title Fight Should Headline UFC on Fox 5

Nathan McCarterJun 7, 2018

Frankie Edgar's attempt to regain his lightweight title did not go according to plan. He exits UFC 150 feeling empty and knowing that he will be at least one fight away from another shot at the UFC championship.

At the post-fight press conference, Dana White said that Edgar would probably have to take a non-title fight at featherweight as well due to the division being clogged. However, I think with a deeper look at the picture, he would see an opportunity for a big night on Fox.

Currently, Jose Aldo is slated to defend his featherweight title against Erik Koch. No offense to Koch, but casual fans have no idea who he is and it is debatable if he is even the top contender in the division right now. Removing him from the title bout can only help elevate the featherweight division.

I am sure a substantial “I am sorry you got pulled from a title fight” check would ease his hurt feelings.

There is no better way to promote the exciting featherweights than to put them on national network television in December.

Give Edgar the immediate title shot against Aldo. Make that your main event for UFC on Fox 5. Showcase two of the pound-for-pound best fighters in the world for free and make them stars.

The event is already getting a promotable and anticipated co-main event between BJ Penn and Rory MacDonald, according to John Morgan of MMAJunkie.com. The co-main and main event of UFC on Fox 5 could be a major event for the UFC and help make more stars for the UFC to sell on future pay-per-views.

The lighter weights in the UFC have a hard time drawing interest. The hardcore fanbase know their talents, but the casual fans who drive higher PPV buyrates do not. Showcase these talents. Give them the platform to excite and show why they are worthy of buying their next PPV fight.

If there is any concern of clogging up the featherweight division, a contenders fight between Erik Koch and Chan Sung Jung could start off the Fox card.

Not only is this fight exciting, but it would give the fans watching on network television the next featherweight championship fight to be seen on PPV. As they realize how exciting the featherweights are, they instantly become excited for the next championship fight.

The UFC has the opportunity to show casual fans that the featherweights—and all lighter weights—are worthy of their hard-earned dollars. The Fox platform would make stars out of no less than three incredibly talented fighters who will leave it all in the Octagon in December.

Using veterans who have proven themselves is fine. The last Fox show was incredible. Yet, this incredible platform could be used to better elevate the star power of the younger fighters and lighter weights that do not get the credit they deserve. That is what the next Fox card should be about.

It is a win-win for the UFC. By putting on this suggested card, they help the buyrate of the 2013 title fight between the two winners. They also create more young stars to help carry the brand in the future.

The December Fox card is the perfect opportunity to make a statement about the lighter weight classes and build the future stars of the sport.

Edgar vs. Aldo for the UFC Featherweight Championship is the ideal UFC on Fox 5 main event.
