PGA Championship 2012: Day 3 Leaderboard Updates, Highlights and More

Mike HoagAug 11, 2012

Third-round play has been suspended at the PGA Championship at Kiawah Island. The season’s final major hit a speed bump Saturday as harsh weather conditions at the Island Course in South Carolina caused the shutdown of the tournament.

After McIlroy’s poor performance on Friday, in which he shot a second-day 75 following his opening round 67, the third ranked golfer in the world stormed back on Saturday.

McIlroy, though, was cut short from finishing a day in which he did almost everything right. He shot an impressive four-under par on the front-nine and took co-lead with veteran Vijay Singh before the tournament was suspended.

Carl Pettersson, tied for the lead before entering play today, did enough to keep himself in contention by posting a two-under par before his day ended prematurely on the eighth hole.

Then we come to Tiger Woods. The story of every tournament, no matter where Woods is in the rankings, seems to gravitate to Tiger. In this one, though, Woods was in contention and tied for the lead heading into the weekend.

In what looked to be another weekend collapse for Woods, he has been momentarily saved by the weather. Currently, Woods sits at one-under par and has not played himself out of contention. Given the harsh conditions and swirling winds, Woods just may have a chance as his opponents will have just as much trouble navigating through those conditions.

Final Day Prediction

This weather is beginning to get the best of some of the best golfers in the world. However, the cream is beginning to rise to the top as each player gains more and more experience with the course.

It's kind of been trial by fire up until this point.

With another night to think about, analyze and plan for the rest of Round 3 and the final fourth round on Sunday, expect golfers like Singh, McIlroy, Pettersson and Woods to continue to fight the course as best as they can.

Expect Woods to rebound from a terrible Day 3 and bring himself back into contention in the final fourth round. Woods and McIlroy, despite Woods' fall out of the top 10, are the golfers to beat on Sunday.

McIlroy, though, will be too fast for Woods and the rest of the pack to catch.
