Could Larry Brown be the answer for the Denver Nuggets?

Alex GobleMar 13, 2008

Watching the inconsistent Denver Nuggets play, it is quite obvious that they need a true leader to guide them into battle. Which players emerge as leaders will have to be worked out, but the leadership of the head coach may be easier to fix.

George Karl is an excellent head coach, but he has lost control of his team. When he was the coach of the Seattle Supersonics, he was known as a stern ruler that lead with an iron fist. Now, after battling both his own cancer and his son Coby's, Karl is a much more laid back coach. Gone is the stern ruler that would accept nothing short of perfection from his players, and in his place is a coach that is afraid to call out his team for fear of losing them all together.

Insert Larry Brown.

He is know as one of the last "tough" coaches that is not still coaching a specific team. Many will say that the relationship between Brown and Iverson is damaged beyond repair, but at that is not true. Iverson has matured during his time in the league since Brown left the 76ers, and he wants nothing more than to win a championship. Iverson's ego would not be an issue since he would know what to expect from Brown the second time around.

The Detroit Pistons were a very good basketball team that could not get over that last hill to become a championship-caliber team. Larry Brown came in and forged them into a championship team.

The Denver Nuggets are seemingly in the same situation. They just need that extra push to become one of the better teams in the league. They are far from being considered championship-caliber, but with the right leadership from the right coach, they may be on their way to greener pastures.

There is also the chance that Larry Brown could set this team back a few years. He was given the head coaching job in New York after what he accomplished in Detroit, and the result was a horrible one. The players turned on him and he completely lost control of the situation. This Nuggets team has some hot-headed players that don't take well to stern coaching.

The main factor in this situation is how Iverson would deal with this change. If he takes it upon himself to become a team leader and apllies himself to Brown's coaching, then this could be a fantasy situation. If Iverson remembers why he had a cold relationship with Brown and goes back to his old ways, the situation could get ugly real fast.
