Olympic Soccer 2012 Gold Medal Game: Mexico Edges Brazil for London Win

Alex HallJun 7, 2018

Mexico came flying out of the gates against Brazil in the men's soccer final, scoring in the first 36 seconds of the match which ultimately helped win the contest for the nation. Mexico defeated Brazil by a score of 2-1 despite a valiant effort by Neymar and company.

Oribe Peralta's scored for Mexico before the first minute of the contest had even gone by, with the Brazilian keeper unable to stop his shot aimed towards the near post of the goal.

The Brazilians seemed dumbfounded by the goal, unable to really mount an offensive attack until the tail end of the first half. Neymar lead the offensive awakening for his nation, harassing the Mexican defense towards the end of the first half and created several promising possessions in the process.

The Brazilian star would continue his attempts at scoring the team's first goal well into the second half but ultimately proved unable to do so. Peralta would dash away any of Brazil's hopes at pulling even before the 90th minute when he drilled a shot into the back of his opposition's goal in the 75th.

To the Brazilians credit, the team never gave up during this contest, scoring their first goal in the 91st minute thanks to a successful shot by Hulk.

Brazil had control of the ball for 60 percent of the contest, but unfortunately for the team only one of those possessions lead to a goal. Mexico's defense held strong against countless attacks from the Brazilians and were one of the main reasons for its victory.

The 2011 CONCACAF champions added yet another major victory to Mexico's soccer history, winning its first ever Olympic gold medal in the sport. For all its rich soccer history, Brazil will leave yet another Olympic Games without a gold medal.
