The Doctor's WWE SmackDown Recap: The 122 Things We Learned, Loved and Hated

The Doctor Chris MuellerJun 7, 2018

Welcome, ladies and gentlemen, to my weekly SmackDown recap list. I always appreciate my loyal readers, but for those of you who are new, each week I recap SmackDown with a long list.

The entries are made up of equal parts observations, humor, recap, play-by-play, revelations, speculations, questions, answers and anything else I notice during the show. I sometimes comment on commercials, too, just because I get bored during them.

I try and interject some fun into these lists, so I hope you have fun reading this week's list of the 122 things we learned, loved and hated from the show.

Monday Night RAW

1. If I seem more interested in the recap videos tonight it is because I missed the last hour of Raw this week due to a power outage, which unfortunately stopped the Live Blog dead in its tracks for the night.
2. It seems like 70 percent of the superstars on the opening video are lucky if they get one match a month on Smackdown while the other 30 percent are featured every week.
3. Josh Mathews welcomes us to the show and Michael Cole plugs the return of the Highlight Reel with Chris Jericho.
4. Booker T comes out in a tux to start us off.
5. Are spineroonis covered under the "normal wear and tear" policy tux shops have?
6. Book hypes the crowd a bit and Cole makes fun of his "Houston, we have a problem" line.
7. We get a replay of Sheamus stealing Alberto Del Rio's car last week.
8. I don't know why, but I kind of liked that storyline. It seemed like something WWE used to do all the time and doesn't do anymore.
9. Booker laughs at the clip but he still says it was over the line and wants Sheamus to apologize.
10. Sheamus comes out and and talks about why he stole the car with a huge smile on his face.
11. He then apologizes to Booker, the WWE Universe and ADR, but the ADR apology seemed less than enthusiastic.
12. Why in the blue hell would Booker think that grand theft auto and property damage would be settled with an apology? Del Rio comes out to agree with me.
13. He says he filed a police report and Booker says that if Sheamus can't defend his title, then Del Rio will not get his title shot and ADR says he doesn't care.
14. Sheamus tells Del Rio to relax and he says he has a solution. He says he should just defend the title against ADR tonight to make up for it and ADR agrees.
15. Booker does his "Sucka" catchphrase to end the segment. I already think he should go back to commentary.
16. Sin Cara comes out after the break for his match with Cody Rhodes.
17. Cody Rhodes comes out with a mic during his entrance and he says he knows all about wearing masks and he thinks Cara is ugly and that is why he wears the mask.
18. I think he wears it to hide his true identity. He's Aldo Montoya.
19. Cara uses some quick offense to send Rhodes outside the ring.
20. Rhodes tries to take off the mask when he gets Cara down.
21. This is unique. Rhodes gets Cara on his back in a stretch submission and he tries to rip the mask off at the same time.
22. These lights Sin Cara uses make Rhodes look really orange.
23. Cara hits a springboard elbow followed by a top-rope arm drag.
24. Rhodes gets the advantage back by hitting a big elbow to Jason Lee Scott.
25. Rhodes goes for the mask a third time and this allows Sin Cara to roll him up for the surprise win.

26. I have learned that Cole likes to use the word "era" a lot.
27. Daniel Bryan is shown backstage randomly screaming "No" at people.
28. His angle is starting to get strange. I liked the crazy thing for a few minutes, but now he may as well be yelling "I am not a nugget!"
29. Miss you, Owen.
30. Wade Barrett's wicked-awesome video package airs before Daniel Bryan comes out to the ring.
31. I hope Barrett keeps the beard. He looks more menacing. That's why I have a full beard at all times.
32. Well, that and because I like to save food for later.
33. Bryan hates that the crowd is chanting Yes during his entrance and he gets a mic to scream No.
34. He goes back and forth with the crowd for a second. You know you are doing a good job when the whole crowd participates in your angle without you having to put in much of an effort.
35. Bryan says he should be in the WWE title match at SummerSlam instead of facing Kane because his ex holds a grudge.
36. I don't care what anyone says, Kane vs. Bryan is going to be a good match. Kane is the best he has been in the last five years and Bryan is just the best, period. They will put on a match that people will talk about, mark my words.
37. Kane's pyro hits and he comes out to the ring with Bryan looking scared. The two circle each other a bit before AJ comes out.
38. She says Bryan needs to stay in the ring as she approaches.
39. I honestly don't know what to think right now. Is AJ professional? Is AJ crazy? Did she just listen the The Cure too much?
40. She talks to both men about things that honestly don't matter. LET THEM FIGHT! This is getting boring.
41. She wants them to shake hands. Bryan objects at first but then sticks his hand out.
42. AJ winks at Kane and Kane attacks Bryan instead.
43. Bryan tries to fight back but he gets a big boot to the face to send him out of the ring and through the crowd to escape.
44. AJ is laughing on the ramp.
45. Soooo, what just happened? Did AJ orchestrate that whole thing somehow?
46. AJ looks adoringly at Kane from the ramp as Kane hits his magic pyro and stares back at her.
47. Booker is backstage and Tyler Reks and Curt Hawkins walk in and ask for shot and Booker says they need to step it up to be on SmackDown, citing their two-on-one loss to Ryback.
48. Reks tells Hawkins that he can't go back to his old job.
49. Now I am curious. What was his old job? Male stripper, dreadlock weaver or maybe he was a professional Predator impersonator.
50. Commercial. So I just watched Kevin Smith's Too Fat for 40 and Kevin Smith: Burn in Hell and I am kind of curious to see Red State. Anyone know if it is worth seeing? I heard mixed reviews so I never made an effort despite being a big Smith fan. If you are, too, I recommend going to NetFlix and checking out the shows I mentioned.

51. Jinder Mahal is out after the break to face two local jobbers.
52. He can't beat Ryback so he has to steal his shtick? Whatever.
53. Mahal taunts Ryback by mocking how he slaps his own head during the match.
54. After he wins really fast, he puts both men in the Camel Clutch.
55. I don't think I can recall seeing someone do a double Camel Clutch before. That was kind of cool.
56. Ryback comes out and chases off Mahal but then he grabs the two jobbers and hits his double finisher on them.
57. What did they do to you, Ryback?
58. Awesome. The Highlight Reel is back after the break and Jericho gets interrupted by Vickie, who says Dolph Ziggler won't be coming out for the segment.
59. SHENANIGANS!
60. Jericho cracks some jokes at Vickie's expense and then they scream "Excuse me" back and forth at each other before Vickie has a mild stroke.
61. Vickie threatens to leave the show and Jericho tells her to "Get the hell out of here then."
62. I don't know how I feel about this Y2J-lite thing he is doing.
63. Jericho shows us the tout he made during the match on Monday where Riley beat Ziggler.
64. I wish someone would mention the fact that Jericho and Vickie have known each other for something like 20 years. He came up with Eddie through ECW, WCW and WWE.
65. Miss you too, Eddie.
66. Jericho goes on a rant about how he has not lost his touch and Ziggler comes through the crowd, but he fails to hit Y2J with the briefcase and Jericho is able to get Ziggler down on the mat before locking onto Vickie.
67. Ziggler hits the Zig Zag out of nowhere and he grabs the case and hits Jericho just as he gets back up.
68. Vickie laughs her perfect Cruella DeVil laugh as they stand over Jericho.
69. He really clocked Jericho good with that case.
70. I love how Josh Mathews goes from witnessing a brutal attack to casually throwing to a clip of earlier tonight. He is the Mike Adamle of WWE.
71. Never mind. He's not as bad as that.
72. Kofi and Truth come out for commentary during the No. 1 contender match for their tag titles.
73. I want to like the Prime Time Players, I really do, but that dancing is ridiculous and makes me take them less seriously.
74. Young and Epico start out and Young starts out aggressively, attacking Epico with a big running shoulder before he tags out for a double team.
75. Kofi says "Young is built like a house and O'Neil is built like a horse."
76. Primo tags in and hits a big DDT for a near fall.
77. AW throws water on Kofi and Truth, who chase him into the ring and cause the match to end early, so AW's team did not suffer a loss due to a DQ decision.
78. Now they get a title shot. I gotta say, I did not see that scenario coming. I thought AW would be involved somehow, but that was some clever s#$%.
79. Nice. Antonio Cesaro is out after the break.
80. He does his five languages things again.
81. Christian's music hits. Finally. Some real competition for Cesaro.
82. I have to share this. Someone is watching the show with me and she just said this about Christian. "When that guy gets older, he is going to look like Christopher Walken, in a bad way."
83. I nearly spit out my drink.
84. After the break, we see Cesaro take an early advantage.
85. Impressive. He lifts Christian up by his mid-section and holds him for a few seconds before slowly pulling him up for a slam.
86. Wow! Cesaro hit a fall-away slam and actually bridged it for a pin attempt. I am seeing a few things tonight I don't know if I have seen before.
87. Cesaro avoids a Killswitch but Christian counters into a reverse DDT.
88. Oh my god! Christian goes for a spear and Cesaro lifts him right up in the air and hits a European uppercut as Christian came back down. That was awesome.
89. Somehow, Christian is able to kick out and reverse another finisher from Cesaro into a spear for the win.
90. As Christian celebrates, Cesaro attacks him and sends him from the top rope to the outside.
91. He picks Christian up and runs him into the barricade.
92. I enjoyed every second of what I just saw. The match was not that long but very impressive in terms of Cesaro doing a few things I have never seen in a WWE ring before. He looked strong tonight, despite the loss.
93. Is Cesaro yelling at everyone in Russian?
94. Did I forget to mention Aksana? She looked great, as usual, but she is becoming less and less relevant.
95. I looked away for a second and somehow a match between Eve and Kaitlyn for some job on Booker's staff was made. Even Diva's backstage segments are over in the blink of an eye.
96. Rey Mysterio is out before the break for his match with Miz.
97. Of course, it would work out where the one week I miss part of Raw also has a SmackDown which does not recap every event from Raw about a 1000 times.
98. Miz is out after the break and he backs Mysterio into the corner to start the match.
99. Rey hits a headscissors and a pair of boots to get some room.
100. I can't tell what happened, but Mysterio did not hit a springboard back flip into a reverse DDT the right way and Miz had to save it by hitting a backbreaker and throwing Rey out of the ring.
101. Hahahaha! Miz can clothesline Rey from a kneeling position because he is so short.
102. Miz comes off the top rope into a dropkick from Mysterio who climbs the rope and hits a flying senton.
103. Miz catches Rey when he tries for the 619 but Rey is able to roll him up for the pin and the win.
104. I fully expected Miz to win in some cheap way. Maybe this is the start to Miz's first IC title feud.
105. ADR and Sheamus are shown walking backstage before the break as they head out for their match.
106. There is not a lot of time left for this World Title match, but there has been a decent amount of good wrestling tonight, so I won't complain.
107. Del Rio has switched to a black scarf. That is soooo much more dangerous looking.
108. As the match is about to start, some cops come down the ramp and ADR gets a mic and tries to get them to stop so he can have his title shot.
109. They surround the ring and ADR calls for them to attack Sheamus, prompting Cole to say that they are not actually cops.
100. They dog-pile on Sheamus, who is trying his best to break free. Del Rio comes in to pick the bones.
111. Does anyone know if all those cops are from developmental?
112. They holds Sheamus up so Del Rio can hit a running enzuigiri kick.
113. He sends the fake cops away and he stands over a broken Sheamus.
114. Del Rio locks in the CAB to punish Sheamus some more.
115. If they ever make another Zorro movie they need to cast Del Rio as the villain. I don't know why that popped into my head, but he would be perfect as a Spanish villain in an over-the-top movie. Sort of like Bucho from Desperado.
116. The show ends with Del Rio standing tall over Sheamus.
117. I thought it was a pretty good show. There were a few good matches and I don't think WWE wasted too much time on social media, video recaps or segments that went on for too long, although the AJ segment got boring for a few seconds at one point.
118. Cesaro is going places if he keeps pulling out moves that the audience does not see on a regular basis.
119. It still amazes me how the Divas title is getting no attention whatsoever and yet Kaitlyn and Eve have a match for a job opening with Booker T.
120. I feel I have earned the right to do one selfish thing. Tomorrow is the one thing outside of a love of wrestling that Hulk Hogan and I have in common. It is our birthday.
121. He is turning 59 and I am turning 1104.
122. First person to get the joke gets a shoutout next week. The part about it being mine and Hulk's birthday is not the joke.
