Olympic Medal Count 2012: United States Captures Gold Medal Lead on Day 13

The United States continued to have an impressive showing at the 2012 London Olympics on Thursday, capturing 10 total medals and five gold medals.

Headed into Day 13, the U.S. had eclipsed new Olympics rival China in total medals, but still trailed in gold medals.

But Thursday brought an end to that.

In the team events, the U.S. captured gold in women's soccer and women's water polo. The women's soccer team got revenge on Japan, which beat the side in the 2011 World Cup.

As for the individual events, Ashton Eaton and Christian Taylor grabbed gold in the decathlon and triple jump respectively, while Claressa Shields came out on top in the women's boxing middleweight division (75 kg/165 pounds).

Trey Hardee and Will Claye followed Eaton and Taylor with silver medals in the decathlon and triple jump respectively, while Haley Anderson captured silver in the women's open water swimming.

The United States now has more gold medals than China in the 2012 Summer Games (39 to 37) and has widened its lead in total medals (90 to 80). China grabbed four total medals on Thursday, including one gold medal in the women's 10-meter platform (Chen Ruolin).

The Americans are looking to recapture their historical dominance in gold medals in the Summer Games after China shocked them in the 2008 Beijing Olympics with 51 gold medals.

Track & field has been a big part of the United States' success. The country has racked up 24 total medals and seven gold medals in the sport already, and there are still 15 events remaining.

This has backed up the Americans' predictable success in swimming. The U.S. has posted 31 total medals, including 16 gold medals, in swimming.

There is one more event left in swimming on Friday, the men's open water (10-kilometer marathon). Alex Meyer is ranked fourth among the competition, according to Bovada odds.
