Robert Griffin III: Redskins QB Impressive in NFL Debut

Sam R. QuinnAug 9, 2012

If Robert Griffin III's regular-season numbers look anything like the numbers he put up in his preseason debut, the Washington Redskins are going to be just fine.

The No. 2 pick in the 2012 NFL draft donned a Redskins uniform for the first time against the Buffalo Bills on Thursday night, and Redskins fans surely liked what they saw.

He began the opening drive of the game with a pair of handoffs to Evan Royster. Mike Shanahan turned RGIII loose for the first time on a third-and-long in which the phenom led wide receiver Pierre Garcon just out of bounds, forcing the Redskins to punt.

Once the 'Skins got the ball back, Griffin connected on a pass to Leonard Hankerson in the flat to bring up a third-and-one situation. That would be the end of the drive, as Royster lost a fumble and turned the ball over to the Bills.

On his third attempt of the game, Griffin hit tight end Niles Paul, who apparently has frying pans for hands and couldn't come down with it.

Griffin's first impressive read of the day came on a 20-yard completion to Garcon across the middle. It was another run play to the right side before Griffin got to showcase his arm once more by hitting Garcon again for an 18-yard throw-and-catch over the middle.

A few more run plays brought the 'Skins down to the Buffalo 22-yard line, where Griffin dumped off a nice wide-receiver screen to Garcon on the left side that went for an easy touchdown.

That was all we saw from Griffin on the night, as Shanahan decided to take him out on a high note and throw Rex Grossman in there.

Griffin finished the night completing 4-of-6 passes for 70 yards and a touchdown. His rating was a whopping 145.8.

Unfortunately, we didn't get to see Griffin scramble at all, but there is plenty of time for that.

If he exhibits the same kind of chemistry with Garcon that we saw tonight, the NFC East and the rest of the league will definitely have trouble with the Redskins' offense in 2012.
