The United States of America has not hosted the Olympics since the 2002 Winter Games in Salt Lake City, and the country's best chance of hosting another Olympics will likely be in 2024.

The 2024 Olympics would be a fantastic opportunity for the United States to welcome the world to the Summer Games for the first time since 1996 in Atlanta.

Even though recent bids by New York City (for 2012) and Chicago (for 2016) failed, there's no reason for a great number of American cities not to consider making bids for 2024.

Let's look at the three American cities that could do the best job hosting the 2024 Summer Olympics.

3) Philadelphia

The city of Philadelphia is home to some of the most passionate sports fans in the country and would be a fantastic candidate to host a Summer Olympics.

There are plenty of stadiums already built inside and around the city that could serve as quality venues for many different Olympic sports. Lincoln Financial Field, the Wells Fargo Center and Citizens Bank Park would give Philadelphia three quality venues ready for use.

Philadelphia is the fifth largest city in the United States and has never hosted the Olympic Games. The city has made attempts over the last century to host the games, attempts which have failed each time. It was one of the American cities that wanted to host the 2016 Summer Olympics, which ultimately were awarded to Rio Di Janeiro of Brazil.

With a large number of people, an already impressive sports infrastructure and the experience of having hosted Olympic trials before, Philadelphia would be wise to consider launching a bid for the 2024 Summer Olympics.

2) Houston

Houston is the fourth largest city in America and has never hosted an Olympic Games of any kind.

Like Philadelphia, the Houston area has an impressive number of sporting venues capable of hosting a number of different Olympic events.

Colleges in the area, such as the University of Houston, would also be able to provide athletic venues and housing for athletes and officials.

It's also important to note that the Astrodome would likely need to undergo a significant renovation for 2024 or be torn down to make way for a new state-of-the-art facility to be built on the same site.

The only problem for Houston could be competition from Dallas, which is the state's second largest city and an area with some fantastic stadiums, such as the new Cowboys Stadium. Dallas certainly has what it takes to launch a bid for the 2024 games, so Houston might face competition from its in-state neighbor.

However, after hosting some Olympic-event trials over the past five years, Houston has shown that it's capable of being a great host city for a Summer Olympics.

1) New York

New York City is the largest American city, but interestingly enough, it has never hosted an Olympic Games. However, New York has hosted two Olympics in Lake Placid, most recently the 1980 Winter Olympics.

After failing to land the 2012 Summer Olympics, New York City remains the best candidate in the United States as a host city for 2024.

NYC is certainly capable of hosting any kind of sporting event the world has to offer. Not only are there a plethora of capable stadiums already built in the city for Olympic use, but venues in New Jersey and Buffalo are also places where Olympic events can be held.

Since New York City has everything you could want in a possible host city for the Olympics, it would be quite surprising if it wasn't among the top American cities making strong efforts to host the 2024 Summer Olympic Games.
