Olympic Medal Tally 2012: United States Explodes Past China on Day 12

Ryan RudnanskyJun 7, 2018

The United States figured to make a move up the medal table on the sixth day of track & field competition at the 2012 London Olympics, but even the Americans may have been surprised at their level of success when all was said and done.

On Day 12 of the 2012 Summer Games, the U.S. captured 11 medals, including four gold medals. Germany was a distant second place with five total medals.

The United States grabbed gold in the men's 110 meter hurdles (Aries Merritt), women's long jump (Brittney Reese), women's 200 meters (Allyson Felix) and women's beach volleyball (Misty May-Treanor and Kerri Walsh).

In fact, some Americans found their greatest competition in their respective events to be fellow Americans. Jason Richardson placed second to Merritt and the duo of Jen Kessy and April Ross were beaten by May-Treanor and Walsh in the women's beach volleyball final.

Heck, the U.S. even won bronze medals in women's boxing and women's wrestling.

The United States now has 81 total medals in Olympics competition and 20 of them have come in track & field. In fact, track & field and swimming have combined to account for 50 of the Americans' medals.

The U.S. has also had a strong showing in gymnastics, capturing six total medals, including three gold.

The crazy thing is, there are still 20 more medal events in track & field before the end of the Summer Games. That's 20 gold medals and 60 total medals up for grabs, for those of you not good at math.

The United States may be up by four total medals over China through Wednesday, but that lead figures to increase even more by the end of the 2012 London Olympics.
