Brittney Reese and Janay DeLoach Take Gold and Bronze in Women's Long Jump

Eric BallAug 8, 2012

What a day for the Americans in track and field.

One of Wednesday big events was the women’s long jump, where two Americans won the right to stand on the medal podium.

California native Brittney Reese won the gold by jumping 7.12 meters, with Elena Sokolova of Russia taking silver and American Janay DeLoach taking bronze.

Reese has been one of the best long-jumpers for the last few years as a four-time world champion. She is only the second American woman to win the event, joining Jackie Joyner-Kersee in 1988.

The 25-year-old saved her best for last as her longest jump came in the finals.

What it Means

America has received seven gold medals on the day thus far on the track, with three of them being gold. It has been by far best day yet for American track and field athletes in this Olympics, and they have been a major reason why the U.S. is still in the middle of a hotly contested race with China for overall medal supremacy.

The USA track and field twitter feed provided this spectacular stat to highlight just how successful the women’s team has been thus far in London:

"

Women have already won 11 medals, second-highest in any Olympics behind boycotted 1984 Games!
