WWE SummerSlam 2012: Card Additions That Would Make PPV a Must-See Event

Mike ChiariJun 2, 2018

SummerSlam is always one of the marquee events on the WWE calendar, and that appears to be the case once again this year. There have already been a few matches announced for the card, but in order to ensure that SummerSlam appeals to a wide-ranging audience, several additions still need to be made.

The WWE has a deep enough roster to put on a quality show every time out, but it's a matter of whether the creative team is willing and able to put the necessary work in. SummerSlam is closing in quickly and time is running out to advance storylines and make matches, so hopefully there is plenty planned for the upcoming week.

Here are three additions to the SummerSlam card that would ensure its success and the overall support of the WWE Universe.

Dolph Ziggler vs. Chris Jericho

It has been in the works for the past several weeks, so conventional wisdom would seem to indicate that Dolph Ziggler and Chris Jericho will be having a match at SummerSlam.

Jericho's tour with his band, Fozzy, begins on Aug. 14, though, so that would conflict with SummerSlam on Aug. 19. Apparently the band isn't scheduled to play on that night, however, so Y2J should still be able to compete one last time before taking another extended leave of absence.

The result of this match would obviously be a Ziggler win since Jericho enjoys putting over younger talent and would have nothing to gain from winning.

Regardless of that, the Ziggler vs. Jericho feud has been my favorite thing on WWE programming as of late, and since both of them are excellent in-ring workers, the match would be great too. Ziggler needs a big win to legitimize himself as the Money in the Bank contract holder, and Jericho is the ideal.

Rey Mysterio in WHC Match

I'm not sure that there has ever been a world title feud that fans care less about than Sheamus vs. Alberto Del Rio for the World Heavyweight Championship.

Del Rio isn't a threat to win the belt, but the creative team continues to roll with this rivalry despite how stale it is. I realize that there aren't a lot of alternatives right now, but one way to make the match a bit more entertaining at the very least would be to throw Rey Mysterio into the mix and make it a triple threat for the title.

Mysterio has nothing going on at the moment and has a history with Del Rio, so his placement in the match would make sense. Also, when Del Rio won the fatal four way to become No. 1 contender, Ricardo Rodriguez stopped a Mysterio pin.

The creative team may have lost its window of opportunity and waited too long, but maybe new SmackDown general manager Booker T can add Mysterio because of Ricardo's interference. Sheamus would still retain, but at least the extra element would hold my interest longer.

Randy Orton vs. The Miz

I have been saying since The Miz's return that I would like to see him feud with Randy Orton, but there continues to be no movement on that front.

It makes so much sense that I'm almost not surprised that the WWE is missing the boat here. Both Orton and Miz are main-event-caliber guys who can have a very meaningful mid-card feud. The WWE puts absolutely nothing into its mid-card anymore, though, so my hope is quickly waning with regards to this match happening.

Not only would it be good since it would put the Intercontinental Championship in a high-profile spot, but it also has some reasoning behind it.

Before Orton was suspended and Miz left to film The Marine 3, Orton gave Miz an RKO for no apparent reason. Their feud could play off that, as well as the fact that Miz was given the movie role over Orton. Miz could claim that he is a bigger star because of that, and then you would have a good, sensible program. Finally, have Miz go over and gain some momentum so he can eventually challenge Sheamus for the World Heavyweight Championship.
