7 Cameroon Olympians Missing from Athletes' Village
During a time that should be about celebrating athletics, real life intervenes and makes you stop in your tracks. According to the Associated Press, seven Cameroon Olympians are missing from the athletes' village in London.
"BREAKING: Cameroon Olympic official says 7 Olympic competitors are missing from the athletes' village.
— The Associated Press (@AP) August 7, 2012"
Reuters reported the names of the athletes as Drusille Ngako (soccer), Paul Ekane Edingue (swimming), Thomas Essomba, Christian Donfack Adjoufack, Abdon Mewoli, Blaise Yepmou Mendouo and Serge Ambomo (boxing).
That same Reuters report says that "the seven...are suspected of having left to stay in Europe for economic reasons." That has not been confirmed by anyone else at this point.
The Wall Street Journal wrote that "athletes with Olympic visas are entitled to stay in the country until November, so they haven't broken any law by disappearing."
Following up that report, the Telegraph wrote that none of the athletes "have yet applied for asylum in Britain."
There is not a lot of information available beyond that at this time. We will keep you updated on the situation as more news comes out.
