London 2012 United States: Gold Medals America Is Destined to Win
The 2012 Summer Olympics in London are starting to wind down, but there are still plenty of medals left to be decided, including those for many exciting tournaments that have been running throughout the Games.
Americans have a lot invested in some of these bigger tourneys, including both men’s and women’s basketball, water polo and women’s soccer.
Let’s take a closer look at which upcoming events that Team USA is almost guaranteed to win.
Men’s Basketball
The stars and stripes had a scare against Lithuania over the weekend, but that experience obviously humbled the superstar-studded squad. They recovered for a complete and utter destruction of Argentina in the final group game.
Now the U.S. enters the medal rounds and has an easy road to the gold game. Considering Spain’s underwhelming performance thus far—their biggest threat—there is almost no country capable of challenging America in men’s basketball.
Expect this group to easily take home another gold.
Women’s Basketball
The women of Team USA have not lost a game since the 1992 Olympics. They earned a bronze in those games and haven’t dropped a gold in any Olympiad since then.
This current group is a true “Dream Team”, a squad that is just dominating the opposition and keeping the US women’s dynasty alive. There is simply no way this team loses and it’s unlikely that any team even comes within 20 points of their final score.
Women’s Soccer
The U.S. women have a tough rematch of their heartbreaking 2011 women’s World Cup finals defeat to Japan. However, they have some added motivation to beat them in the gold medal match.
Alex Morgan and Abbey Wambach are both in peak form and coming through in big moments. Morgan scored a 122’ goal against the Canadians in the semifinals to earn a gold medal berth for the U.S.
Expect them to finish the job this time in London, something they were not able to do in Germany last year.
