USC Football: New Trojans RB Silas Redd Should Let His Play Do All the Talking

Met by a large group of reporters, the first practice has come and gone for the USC Trojans. They weren't there to see head coach Lane Kiffin or really any other player for that matter; they were there for Penn State transfer Silas Redd.

The running back thanked the group for wanting to talk to him, per the Los Angeles Times, and divulged a little information about his first practice as a Trojan. He spoke on this opportunity being a new chapter, how his transfer was a business decision and called USC his "new family."

"No animosity or hard feelings," Redd said according to the Los Angeles Times. "Football is football."

While Redd is allowed to say whatever he wanted to whoever he wants (with some exceptions, of course), it would be better for the transfer to let his play do the talking. After all, he's only one practice in with the Trojans.

Talk is ultimately just that - talk. Redd will be expected to compete with returning starter Curtis McNeal. In 2011, Redd rushed for 1,241 yards and seven touchdowns, while McNeal rushed for 1,005 yards and six touchdowns. The workload will be more balanced, and Redd and McNeal will be expected to play as a team.

The benefit to having Redd at USC is that it gives Kiffin an unusual advantage with two returning 1,000-yard rushers, per ESPN.com. This means Redd, with McNeal at his side, could be very effective for the Trojans in 2012. It is always tough to determine what a player will do at a new school in a new conference, which is exactly why Redd should let his playing do the talking for him.

While it's good to see Redd so excited for his new home, it's now time for the running back to let his hard work do the talking. Because after all, football is football and talent is talent. What is proved on the field will always be much more poignant than what is said off of it.
