Maple Leafs-Rangers: Vesa Toskala Deserves Full Credit for Toronto Win

Walt WebbFeb 23, 2009

The Toronto Maple Leafs were at Madison Square Garden last night to take on the New York Rangers.

Vesa Toskala had a great game and was the main reason why the Leafs won the game 3-2 in overtime.

Toskala stopped 39 of the Rangers' 41 shots in the victory.

Allsports ended up jinxing Toskala for the shutout. Just after Mitchell had put the Leafs on the board to make it 1-0, I said to a buddy, "The way Toskala is playing, he deserves a shutout."

Less than two minutes later, the puck was in the net behind him.

The Rangers have been in a bit of a funk lately, and Tom Renney became the victim of their resent skid. Rangers management relieved Renney of his duties behind the Rangers bench less than twenty-four hours after the home loss to the Leafs. Renney had coached the Rangers for almost five years.

If you look for sports on the web and search the NHL for the New York Rangers, you would see that at the beginning of the year the Rangers were being picked as one of the top teams in the Eastern Conference.

Personally, Allsports did not see it that way and felt that the Rangers would be lucky to get into the playoff picture. The Rangers are currently tied with the Montreal Canadians for fifth spot in the conference with 69 points, but are only two points up on the Carolina Hurricanes, who sit in ninth.
