Manchester United Transfer News: PSG Win Race for Lucas Moura

Dan TalintyreAug 7, 2012

It seems we can finally put an end to the Lucas Moura transfer saga that has plagued the summer transfer window to date.

Manchester United's top transfer target this summer is reportedly set to snub a move to Old Trafford by choosing to sign with big-spending French club Paris St. Germain, who are believed to have offered a significant offer for Lucas.

United were believed to be pulling out of the race for Lucas due to excessive demands by the player's agents and family (per The Daily Mirror) and according to the latest on Sky Sports, PSG have made a play for the 19-year-old.

Inter Milan president Massimo Moratti—whose club was also rumored to be interested in signing the teenager—stated that PSG have offered a €45 million bid for the Sao Paulo starlet (approximately £35 million).

"

"Faced with such prices, we cannot compete. We have a different logic than that of Paris Saint Germain. The €45m that PSG offered is completely illogical and for us it would've been very out of key with our approach.

PSG are starting a new era, so they are completely reconstructing the squad.

At least I can relish the fact I'm saving money.

We were close to Lucas, for several days we talked about him, but honestly I never really believed in this deal, because it was too expensive."

"

That news was then confirmed by Sao Paulo vice-president Joao Paulo de Jesus—again on Sky Sports, a trustworthy source—that contact had been made by PSG and current PSG sporting director Leonardo.

"

"We have been probed by PSG about Lucas [Moura].

Leonardo has a very good relationship with Sao Paulo.

The possibility exists but it is down to the player's interests. The policy of Sao Paulo is to follow the desires of the player. If the player wishes to leave, Sao Paulo will not create any obstacle. But we must receive a proposal that is appropriate

It's a financial issue. Paris Saint-Germain is a big club in European football and if the player's interests and also the club's are met, I do not see why it would not happen (emphasis mine)."

"

And that, would seem to be that.

Manchester United are not in the financial position to compete with the likes of Paris St. Germain—even if it is for their most desired transfer prospect. The talented teenager is likely to either remain at Sao Paulo or head to the French domestic competition, where he would surely make PSG the hot favorites to clinch the title.

ESPN Soccernet have also confirmed that PSG have made contact with Sao Paulo via their Twitter account, just for good measure.

Whilst the final decision of Lucas is still yet unknown, it is most likely that he will not be coming to Old Trafford over the summer transfer window.

The two options left in play are to remain at his current Brazilian club or move to PSG, but as far as transfers go, there's simply no way that United beats PSG on what Sao Paulo call "a financial issue."

The Red Devils have the history and the allure, but they do not have the bank balance of PSG which, as we've already seen this summer, is very, very strong.

Lucas might have been the next Cristiano Ronaldo; he might have been Sir Alex Ferguson's greatest transfer signing. He might have even been the most talented teenager in the English Premier League, but at the end of the day, he's not.

He's not a Manchester United player, and he won't be one this summer.

Was Lucas right to choose PSG over Manchester United?
