Are the Toronto Maple Leafs Done Already?

Gino GhalehpardazMar 13, 2008

While watching my beloved Maple Leafs, I have easily seen the best hockey played this entire season in these last previous weeks.

That being said, even if they continue with this stellar game play; are they perhaps done anyways? And even if they were to make the playoffs, really, how far would they go?

The fact of the matter is that apart from Mats Sundin, Vesa Toskala, Tomas Kaberle, and Nik Antropov, this team has been underacheiving this entire year.

Jason Blake is perhaps the biggest disapointment, not even coming close to his point total from the previous year.

Another factor is backup goaltender Andrew Raycroft, who had 37 wins last year and is en route to only getting the two he already has.

What happens when Vesa gets hurt? Will Raycroft really be up to the challenge?

The fact of the matter is he won't.

Inconsistensy has played a big part on the Leafs' downfall this year.

Can they really make a rally to be 10-1 for the rest of the season? According to Sportsnet, if they don't do at least that, they are out.

All of this is very negative, but on terms of upside, should this team make the playoffs, my prediction is they will either be out in the first round or will make it to the conference finals or possibly the Cup finals.

This would simply be because of Vesa showing talent in the net the Leafs lacked with the last years of Eddie the Eagle, and the spotty play of Andrew Raycroft.

This is a good team, and they have potential. Had it not been for the inconsistensy and the injuries, we could be looking at a very different Toronto Maple Leafs team.

I still truly believe that, should they make the playoffs by some miracle, they will be a very strong club and very difficult to beat.
