USA vs. Canada Women's Basketball: Why the US Women Will Crush the Canadians

Timothy RappJun 7, 2018

When I say the Canadian women don't have a chance when they face the United States women in the quarterfinals on Tuesday, it has nothing to do with Team Canada. It's not really a slight against them, I swear.

Let me tell you what it is about.

It's about the fact that the U.S. women have won 38 straight Olympic games. It's about the fact that they've won four consecutive gold medals in the competition—and six of the last seven—and that they destroyed China 114-66 on Sunday, breaking numerous single-game records in the process.

We're not done here yet.

The team includes Candace Parker, Diana Taurasi and Tamika Catchings, who have combined to win three of the last four WNBA MVP awards. Sue Bird is a seven-time WNBA All-Star and two-time gold-medal winner. Maya Moore is fresh off of a Rookie of the Year, All-Star appearance and WNBA championship campaign.

I could go on, but you get the drift—this team is loaded with talent.

And they've proved it thus far. The United States has averaged 92.4 points per game and held opponents to 55.8 points per game. If you want some contrast, Canada is averaging 65.6 points for and 66.4 points against thus far in the tournament.

They're in trouble.

The truth is, for all of the talk that accompanies the U.S. men's basketball team, it is the women's side that is the far more dominating team. The men may argue about which version of the squad is better (1992 without a doubt, for what it's worth) or get cute nicknames like "The Dream Team," but for the past 16 years the United States women have simply been called dominant.

So good luck, Canada. You have history and the present against you. You have an All-Star team of WNBA talent to deal with. You have to try and upset the most dominant squad on the planet despite the fact that you went 2-3 in the group stage.

There's David versus Goliath, and then there's this game. Look for the U.S. women to steamroll Team Canada.

Hit me up on Twitter—my tweets don't walk, jog, run or sprint, they Bolt.
