USA vs. Canada Women's Basketball: Team USA Will Embarrass Border Foe

David DanielsAug 7, 2012

Team USA’s women’s basketball team won’t just be thinking gold vs. Canada.

The U.S. won’t stop until it destroys everything in its path—their opponents’ hopes, dreams and self-esteem. Or at least that’s how it seems.

The Canadians will have the pleasure of facing off against the nation they sit adjacent to on Tuesday at 2:00 p.m. ET. Canada may boast the better side of Niagara Falls, but they definitely don’t boast the better basketball team. Expect a beatdown in favor of the Americans in their quarterfinal match.

Team USA has been relentless in London thus far. It beat Croatia by 25 points, Angola by 52, Turkey by 31, the Czech Republic by 27 and China by 48. But apparently a 48-point spread wasn’t enough to satisfy Coach Geno Auriemma’s quest for perfection.

Doug Feinberg of The Associated Press reported that Auriemma vowed that the U.S. would—brace yourself, Canada—improve. He said of their triumph over China (via Atlanta Constitution-Journal):

"

This was a must-win game because the winner of this game won the pool. It's the first time we've been put in this situation. Every game is single elimination and the stakes are higher as well. I know our level of play is going to go up. I'm confident that's going to happen.

"

If the Americans’ level of play goes up any more, the Olympic Committee will need to implement a mercy rule. They’re averaging 92.4 points per game and shooting 55 percent from the field in London. No other team is scoring over 71.2 per and shooting 46 percent from the field.

The Canadians advanced out of Group B with a record of just 2-3. They only average 65.6 points per game. They’re doomed.

Canada will present Team USA with another opponent, but its upset attempt will end with the same result as everyone else’s: a tally in the loss column.
