Olympic Medal Count 2012: Countries That Will Continue to Surge in the Standings

Patrick ClarkeMay 31, 2018

The 2012 London Olympics have produced both predictable and surprising medal results in some cases this summer.

China and the United States have pulled ahead of the rest of the world just as many expected, while the host nation has surprisingly managed to distance itself from the rest of Europe.

As the competition from London continues this August, there are a handful of nations that will continue their surge to the top of the medal standings.

Let's take a look.

Jamaica

The superhuman performance of Usain Bolt in the men's 100-meter dash epitomizes Jamaica's dominance in track and field at the Olympic Games. Heading into Day 10 at the Games, all four of Jamaica's medals were from track and field: two golds, one silver and a bronze. Bolt isn't done yet, and will suit up for the men's 200-meter dash and the men's 4x100-meter relay.

Expect Bolt and the Jamaicans to continue their medal surge in the final week in London behind a strong effort in the track and field events. With six more medals they can leapfrog into the rare air of nations with a double-digit medal count.

Great Britain

The host nation has been surprising to say the least so far at the 2012 Summer Games. Great Britain was third in the medal standings coming into Day 10, boasting 37 total medals. With tons of track and field events left to be determined, the British will have a great shot at adding to their count, and will certainly use the support of the fans to surge in the standings and hold on to their No. 3 position.

Andy Murray's gold medal victory in men's tennis defined the type of first week that the British had in London. Facing incredibly long odds and tough competition, both Murray and Team Great Britain have delivered.

United States and China

The two Olympic powerhouses have been one-upping each other throughout the 2012 London Games, and China led by one medal heading into Day 10. However, the Americans boast a plethora of exciting talent in the track and field competition, which will likely earn them a handful of more medals before it's all said and done. Not to mention Team USA's talent on the soccer field and on the basketball court.

China will have plenty of opportunities to match the US medal for medal, but look for the Americans to edge their competitive rival in the end thanks to the brilliance of their performance in the team sports.
