UFC on FOX 4 Results: Power Ranking the Preliminary Card Fights
UFC on FOX 4 delivered from top to bottom, and while the main card is obviously going to get the majority of the press, the preliminary fights were exciting in their own right.
The prelims were full of guys that love to put on exciting fights, and the Fuel TV main event between Nam Phan and Cole Miller proved just that with their three-round war that got the crowd fired up just before the main card kicked off.
With more exciting fighters like Phil Davis, Manny Gamburyan and Rani Yahya filling out the card, the prelims had a lot of hype behind them, and for the most part, they lived up to it.
6. Phil Davis vs. Wagner Prado
1 of 6The worst fight of the preliminary card was also the shortest.
Just when Phil Davis and Wagner Prado started to exchange, Prado got hit with an accidental finger to the right eye, and the doctor was forced to stop the fight.
It was an unfortunate end to what seemed to be an interesting fight, and the no-contest result leaves the option for a rematch an enticing one.
5. Phil De Fries vs. Oli Thompson
2 of 6In a battle between two British heavyweights, it was Phil De Fries who did enough to earn the victory.
After an entertaining first round that saw both men slug it out on the feet, De Fries eventually got the fight to the mat, where he easily sunk in the rear naked choke.
It was a much-needed win for De Fries, who gets back on track after getting knocked out by Stipe Miocic back in Februrary, and the loss may send Thompson packing.
4. Rani Yahya vs. Josh Grispi
3 of 6Both Josh Grispi and Rani Yahya suffered a free fall down the featherweight ladder over the last year, and the stakes were incredibly high for both fighters.
Everyone knew that Yahya’s best chance at winning this fight was getting it to the mat, and the second it hit the floor, the BJJ world champion went to work.
After breaking down Grispi’s guard, Yahya found the submission he was looking for in a north-south choke, and he locked it in to earn the first-round submission.
3. John Moraga vs. Ulysses Gomez
4 of 6The first fight of the night got things started off right.
The flyweight division always delivers exciting fights, and this one was no exception as John Moraga and Ulysses Gomez put on a solid fight while it lasted.
Gomez came into the fight as the clear favorite, but Moraga surprised a lot of people when he immediately started making life difficult for “Useless” on the feet.
Gomez was never able to get inside and take the fight down, and he paid for it quickly when he was knocked out by a beautiful combination late in the first round.
2. Manny Gamburyan vs. Michihiro Omigawa
5 of 6This was a crucial fight for two of the best judo practitioners in the UFC, as the loser was likely going to find himself on the unemployment line after this bout.
Omigawa found some success on the feet in the first round, but Gamburyan found a way to battle back, using effective stand up and clinch work to gain the advantage as the fight wore on.
In the end, Gamburyan was able to land seven total takedowns throughout the fight, which likely earned him the decision.
1. Nam Phan vs. Cole Miller
6 of 6There’s a reason the UFC chose this fight to main event on Fuel.
Nam Phan and Cole Miller always come to brawl, and they did exactly that in a fight that would have won a post-fight bonus on nearly any other card.
Despite the fact that both fighters' strengths rest in their jiu-jitsu, Phan and Miller decided to come out and swing for the fences, resulting in an extremely entertaining war.
Phan walked away with the split decision, but both fighters gained a lot of fans with that performance.
