Olympic Basketball Standings 2012: Bubble Teams Desperate for Win on Monday

Jun 7, 2018

With group play coming to a close, points to qualify for bracket play are at a premium. With the top four teams in each group of six advancing to the quarterfinals, some teams are in desperate need of a win to qualify or set themselves up with a better matchup.

While teams like the USA and Russia are able to relax knowing that they have set themselves up for good seeding, these teams will need to secure a victory Monday to ensure they aren't eliminated and set themselves up for a medal run.

The Lithuanians have to be buzzing after their closer-than-expected upset bid against Team USA.

Lithuania gave the USA the toughest test they have seen when they held a lead over the Americans halfway through the fourth quarter in their matchup. Despite LeBron James' offensive takeover at the end of the game to seal a 99-94 victory, the Lithuanians were able to put things together unlike anyone has against a stacked American team.

Despite the solid showing the Lithuanians still hold an abysmal 1-3 record. NBA power forward Linas Kleiza has played well to this point and will need to lead the way if the Lithuanians want to beat Tunisia to improve their stock.

The Tunisians have yet to win in Olympic play, so a win should be well within reach, but the Lithuanians could need help from France as they are currently tied with Nigeria for the fourth and final spot in Group A.

Spain

Group A has been more competitive at the top, and the four bracket spots have all but been decided heading into Monday's final matchups.

Russia, Brazil, Spain and Australia have all but locked up spots, but the final games still hold a lot on the line in terms of seeding and momentum. Group B's surprise leader, Russia, has yet to lose in Group play and is playing well as a team.

Group B favorite Spain, on the other hand, has really struggled. The Spanish were stunned by Russia 77-74 just days before barely holding off a winless Great Britain team 79-78. The Spanish have one of the most talented and deep rosters in the entire Olympic field and the best frontcourt.

Winning against Brazil on Monday would not only give them one more point than their Group B rival, but it would be a considerable momentum boost going forward.
