Miguel Cotto Ponders Options Ahead

8count NewsFeb 23, 2009

After last Saturday's victory at Madison Square Garden, welterweight phenom Miguel Cotto has once again found his winning ways.

Many wondered how he would respond after suffering a humiliating loss at the hands of the recently-suspended Mexican great, Antonio Margarito.

If Saturday's result was any indication, it would appear that Cotto is primed and ready for another run at the top.

As he surveys his options, there are many that he can choose from, but some in which have much more appeal than others.

In the sport of boxing, today's landscape can be full of political traps, hovering over money and other agendas.

But all things remaining equal, Cotto has many choices at every level.

Door #1:

If he and Top Rank's Bob Arum wants to take the money route, a showdown between the Pacquiao/Hatton winner, or a rematch with Mosley would be the best option.

This option also works out well because it instantly puts Cotto on a much bigger platform. Right now he’s a solid fighter, but his name recognition is not as strong as he and his staunch supporters may like.

Door #2:

If Team Cotto doesn’t go that route, there’s another route he could ponder that would give him a shot at bigger things ahead.

If Mayweather or Pacquiao were to come knocking at Cotto’s door, he would lose the battle at the negotiating table, because not only is his name smaller around the sport, but he hasn’t carried as much hardware.

So what can he do about that? Take fights against current welterweight champions Andre Berto and Joshua Clottey.

If he were to take those fights and walk away victorious, that would make him one belt shy of being an undisputed champion in arguably the sports deepest division.

Kind of hard to offer short money to a man whose resume is so long, with the hardware to support it.

In the end, whatever option he chooses, Cotto has proven himself in the sport.

And now that we know the only guy to defeat him is out of the game, it’s safe to say that there will be few considerable advantages, be they physical or mental, for any opponent against him.

The road ahead may not be a very easy one to travel, but one thing is for sure. Miguel Cotto won’t be doing it alone!

His supporters are right there with him, rooting for him every step of the way.
