Summer Olympics 2012: Best Athlete Tweets, Twitpics and Instagrams from Day 7

Eric BallAug 3, 2012

The 2012 London Olympics are shaping up to be one of the best we’ve ever seen, and Day 7 did nothing to change that notion.

From Roger Federer’s thrilling 3-6, 7-6 (7-5), 19-17 win over Juan Martin del Potro, which took a record-setting 4 hours and 26 minutes, to Serena Williams 6-1, 6-2 straight-set victory over Victoria Azarenka, it was an unforgettable day at the All England Club.

Once again, it was the United States who stole the show in the pool.

Michael Phelps captured the gold medal in the 100-meter butterfly in what was likely his last ever Olympic swim in a solo event. Seventeen-year-old Missy Franklin set a world record in the 200 backstroke en route to her third gold medal in London.

But this is just scratching the surface on a day where track-and-field events finally began. Here is a recap of all of the tweets and photos sent through the worldwide web on Friday, Aug. 3, aka Day 7 of the 30th Olympiad in London.

#OlympicHero

Missy Franklin did it again, and she's now officially one of the sweethearts of the Olympics alongside gymnast Gabby Douglas.

The Olympics Twitter feed caught a glimpse of Missy right after winning her third gold medal in the 200 backstroke:

"

Not only did Katie Ledecky set a new American record in her gold-medal-winning time of 8:14.63 in the 800 freestyle, but she did so at the age of 15.

Oh by the way, Ledecky is the youngest member of the U.S. swimming team. USA Today snapped a photo of her reaction to the big win:

The U.S. women’s volleyball team clinched the No. 1 spot in its pool after crushing Serbia in straight sets.

Destinee Hooker scored 19 points and provided us with this outstanding shot of the team:

#OneMoreToGo

A gold medal is the only glaring hole in Roger Federer’s remarkable resume, and now, only Andy Murray stands in his way. Don’t tell me this doesn’t mean the world for the 30-year-old:

"

#ItsAboutTime

The highly anticipated track-and-field events finally began on Friday, and as USA Track and Field associate director of national teams Aron McGuire of shows us, the crowd showed up in full force:

Rapid fire pistol is an event that doesn’t get nearly the credit it deserves. Especially with pictures like this one:

It appears as if the U.S. men’s basketball team is infatuated with Michael Phelps. The vast majority of the team was on hand to witness one last individual gold medal for the Olympic king, and LeBron James was able to snap a picture of the medal ceremony like he’s some sort of reporter:

"

While LeBron pretended to be a photographer, teammate Kevin Durant provided the commentary:

"

Just watched phelps win his 17th Gold Medal! Wow

Millions of people are sad to see Phelps hang up the goggles, but something tells me his mom is ready for the heart-stopping races to be over:

ESPN’s Darren Rovell puts into perspective just how incredible Phelps has been over the years:

"

Michael Phelps' 21 Olympic medals tie the all time Summer Games total of Thailand & Morocco.

— darren rovell (@darrenrovell) August 3, 2012"

#USA

There is still plenty of action that remains, but America has to be thrilled with the updated medal count with the first week of the London Games in the books:

"

Team USA has pulled ahead with 43 total medals and 21 gold medals. Team CHN is very close with 42 total medals and 20 gold medals. #olympics
