Sage Rosenfels Likely Headed to Vikings To Compete for Starting QB Position
The Houston Chronicle and ESPN.com report that the Houston Texans are nearing a deal to send veteran backup quarterback Sage Rosenfels to the Minnesota Vikings, likely for Minnesota's 2009 fourth round draft pick. The former Iowa State Cyclone was rumored to be headed to Minnesota last offseason as well, but the deal never materialized.
If this does happen, the quarterback controversy explodes in Minnesota. It is likely that with three QBs already on the roster, one will be released prior to training camp. The most likely of these would be Gus Frerotte, mainly because of his age. Plus, there is probably not a large market for Tarvaris Jackson at this point.
By adding Rosenfels, the Vikings potentially acquire a starting QB they can build around, but also force both Jackson and last year's fifth round pick, former USC QB John David Booty, to really step their game up if they want a chance to be the guy in Minnesota.
From the Texans' perspective, this is obviously a good deal, since they acquire another draft pick in what looks to be a pretty deep draft with offensive and defensive talent. Perhaps even more importantly, the move shows the team believes in Matt Schaub and wants him to be the guy that gets them over the top.
Other news in the NFL today from Indianapolis: Marvin Harrison has asked the Colts for his release, making it even more obvious to me the Colts will look to address the wide receiver position with their first round pick in this draft.
Right now, Brian Robiskie is looking like a pretty sure bet to be a solid NFL receiver, and the Colts love Ohio State receivers. Plus, the young man is the son of Atlanta Falcons wide receivers coach Terry Robiskie. He is well-schooled and should have no problem handling the NFL game from a mental standpoint. He is really the kind of player the Colts love.
Kurt Warner has reportedly been offered a $10 million contract from the Arizona Cardinals, which would make him equal in yearly salary to the Saints' Drew Brees, who beat out Warner for NFL Offensive Player of the Year this season.
At this point, it appears Warner will retire as an Arizona Cardinal. The question is whether that will be this offseason or sometime in the future.
Here's to hoping we'll have at least one more year to see Warner fire balls in all directions for Larry Fitzgerald and let the magic continue.
