Olympic Tennis 2012 Results: Serena Williams Continues Strong Run of Form

Nathan McCarterJun 7, 2018

Serena Williams continued her quest for an Olympic gold medal with the destruction of Caroline Wozniacki. Williams crushed the former No. 1 ranked player in the world 6-0, 6-3. The match only took 77 minutes to complete.

Williams has stormed back to the top of the sport in 2012. Winning Wimbledon capped off a resurgence in 2012 for the 14-time Grand Slam champion.

That is where she will return for her semi-final match. On the opposite side of the court will stand Agnieszka Radwańska. She is the current No. 1 player in the world, and who Williams met in the Wimbledon just a month ago.

Radwańska advanced to the semi-finals with a bit more difficulty.

She was forced to a third set against Irina-Camelia Begu in the very first round of play. Radwańska would rebound in her next match to easily dispatch of Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez. Sanchez won less games than she has names. Nadia Petrova pushed Radwańska to a tie-break in the first set of their third round match. But after Radwańska put her away, she cruised through the second and took the match.

She was pushed to another tie-break in the quarterfinals against Angelique Kerber. However, Radwańska won the match 6-4, 7-5.

Williams will be the ultimate test. The American has only lost 13 games at the London Games. No opponent has won more than three in a set.

The winner of the semi-final will take on a Russian named Maria. Maria Kirilenko and Maria Sharapova will hit the court against one another. Russia is already assured of at least a silver medal in women's tennis.

Judging by how well Williams and Sharapova have played to this point, it is looking like a dream final. Sharapova defeated Kim Clijsters 6-2, 7-5 to advance to her semi-final match. This was the dream final fans wanted last month at Wimbledon before Sharapova was ousted in the fourth round.

Regardless, whoever faces Williams will be the underdog. She is currently on an incredible roll.

An Olympic gold in the singles event will complete Williams' trophy case. It is the only thing missing.

Williams will already go down as one of the greatest to ever play the game of tennis. Will an Olympic medal push her to the front of the pack? That is hard to say, but it certainly does not hurt her case.

First, she must get past Radwańska on Friday. A tall task in its own right. If Williams continues to play like she did on Thursday, there is not anyone who can stop her.

An Olympic gold in London will continue Williams' fantastic 2012 campaign. It has been a banner year for the five-time Wimbledon champion, and it can get even brighter with an Olympic gold hanging around her neck.
