2012 Olympics: Countries That Have Been Dominating the Games

Dan TalintyreJun 3, 2018

We're five days in to the 2012 London Olympic Games, and already the top sporting countries are starting to separate themselves from the rest of the competition.

The usual countries are there, such as the United States and China, but who else has been dominating the Olympic Games' medal tally? What other countries are proving themselves to be one of the top sporting nations in the world?

Read on to see which countries are dominating the 2012 London Olympics after the first five days of competition.

After Day 5, the medal tally stands as listed below, courtesy of Bleacher Report's Donald Wood and his complete medal tracker and standings.

China out in front

China is once again leading the medal tally at an Olympic Games, though they most likely will not reach the incredible 50 gold medals they acquired in the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

Still, with 30 medals through five days of competition including 17 gold medals, it might not be completely out of the picture for a nation growing in it's sporting prestige.

The Asian nation has been dominating so far in the swimming, particularly the women's events, as well as the weightlifting and the diving.

United States close behind

Never far from the action on the medal tally is the United States, who currently sit in second position behind the Chinese, having picked up 29 medals through five days of competition.

The Americans have been dominant as per usual in the pool, and with several gold medals bound to fall their way in sports such as the basketball and football, expect them to remain near the top of the leaderboard for the remainder of these Games.

I'm not sure they can catch China for first place overall, though they currently only trail by a single medal in the overall table.

France, the biggest surprise of them all

Despite their illustrious history, France have not been as dominant in recent years at the Olympic Games as they would have liked. The European nation has traditionally finished with around 30 medals by the time the competition is complete, with roughly eight gold medals to their name.

Thus, to have picked up five golds in just five days of competition is an incredible effort for the French, who currently sit in fourth spot on the medal tally with 13 medals in total.

France have been a revelation in the pool so far—especially on the men's side—and with several strong competitors to come across myriad disciplines, don't be surprised if they remain in the top five on the leaderboard for the remainder of these Games.
