Jordyn Wieber: Breaking Down Gymnast's Chances at Floor Exercise Gold

Richard LangfordJun 5, 2018

Jordyn Wieber has a chance to follow up her gold in the team competition by earning a medal in the individual floor exercise competition, and she will do just that.

Sure, Wieber had likely planned on preparing for the all-around title at this point, but the defending world champion missed out on that opportunity when she finished fourth in the overall qualifying, which is good except she was behind two teammates in the standings—only two members of each team can advance to the all-around.

So, Wieber is left with all that energy that was supposed to be going to making her the world's best all-around gymnast. Now, it's going directly into one event.

Eight women advance to the individual events. They are the eight with the highest scores in the qualifying portion of competition. You will find them listed below in the order that they qualified. The first score is the one from qualifying and the second is their score in this event in the team competition.

Floor Exercise Qualifiers

  1. Alexandra Raisman, USA, 15.325, 15.300
  2. Sandra Raluca Izbasa, Romania, 15.066, 15.200
  3. Vanessa Ferrari, Italy, 14.900, 13.566
  4. Kseniia Afanaseva, Russia, 14.833, 14.333
  5. Lauren Mitchell, Australia, 14.833, N/A
  6. Jordyn Wieber, USA, 14.666, 15.000
  7. Catalina Ponor, Romania, 14.600, 14.800
  8. Aliya Mustafina, Russia, 14.333, 14.800

In qualifying, Wieber's score was lower largely due to the fact that she stepped out of bounds. In the team competition she was nearly flawless, which is good and bad news.

The good news is that she is obviously in good form in this event. The bad news is that she doesn't have the difficulty in her routine to beat Aly Raisman or Sandra Raluca Izbasa.

However, Wieber will likely add some difficulty, and I'd be surprised if she didn't better her score of 15 from the team competition. In the above video she won the floor gold in the 2012 Pacific Rim Gymnastics Championships with a score of 15.125.

Whatever routine she attempts, expect her to nail it. She is far too talented to do anything but flirt with perfection.
