Danell Leyva Bar Routine: American Medals with Epic High & Parallel Bar Display

Austin GreenJun 7, 2018

America loves a comeback story, so brace yourselves for plenty of Danell Leyva hysteria in the coming weeks.

The 20-year-old Cuban-born gymnast made an incredible recovery at the 2012 London Olympics, shaking off early struggles to win the bronze medal in the men's individual all-around competition.

After a clumsy performance on the pommel horse, Leyva was near the bottom of the standings heading into the final events. However, he responded by unleashing two of the most spectacular athletic displays in Olympic history, dominating on the parallel and high bars to catapult himself onto the podium.

Everyone knew Leyva was capable of such feats, and the constantly-animated young man didn't disappoint. He dazzled fans with his gorgeous and deadly routines on the bars, executing daredevil-like moves with surgical precision.

The energy in North Greenwich Arena was palpable throughout his performances, as the crowd audibly gasped with each gravity-defying move. Leyva continuously launched himself higher and higher, powerfully soaring above the bar before landing with the grace of a feather.

He earned a score of 15.833 on the parallel bars, which was tied with silver-medalist Marcel Nguyen of Germany for the top marks in that event. In Leyva's final performance, he was awarded the top score on the high bar, using his breathtaking routine to earn a score of 15.700.

Leyva has been battling the odds since he was an asthmatic toddler, and his comeback in London is a testament to his inspiring perseverance.

As he saw his name near the bottom of the scoreboard, Leyva could have easily given up halfway through the competition. Instead, he pushed his body and mind to their limits, and the result was simply magical.

Leyva may not have walked away with the gold, but with his amazing comeback performance, he is truly one of the biggest winners from this year's Games.
