Manchester United Transfer News: Should United Consider Luka Modric Again?
It might seem like a crazy idea, but it could well be worth Manchester United having another look at a possible move for Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Luka Modric, who was originally touted as a potential summer target for Sir Alex Ferguson (via The Daily Mail).
The Croatian midfielder's imminent departure from White Hart Lane was supposed to bring about a bidding war between Manchester United and Real Madrid over the summer transfer window, with Tottenham likely to sell Modric to the highest bidder (via The Sun).
That appeared on all counts to be the Spanish giants, who have been strongly linked (via The Sun) with Modric over the past few weeks—around the same time since United reportedly withdrew their interest in the star midfielder (via Goal).

But according to the latest report in The Sun, Real Madrid might well pull the plug on a deal with Tottenham for Modric—believed to be fed up with the saga surrounding the asking price that Daniel Levy wants from the Spanish champions.
"Real Madrid are threatening to pull out of their chase for Luka Modric—because Spurs want more money up front. The Spaniards thought they had sealed a £36million deal for the Croatian midfielder.
They want to pay £30m initially with the rest over five years— suggesting they will offer Modric a five-year contract. But Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy insists Madrid must hand over most of the fee in one cash payment — and the remainder in no more than 12 months.
And a White Hart Lane source said: “The chairman is still holding out for £40m, but many think he will accept a little less providing nearly all of the fee is paid up front. He wants most of the money in one hit and is not prepared to wait...”
"
Now whilst there has been no official confirmation from either party about the stage as to where negotiations are currently at, Manchester United may not even want to sign the 26-year-old given his antics over the summer transfer window.
But what could be an interesting hypothetical is if Real Madrid pull out of a deal with Luka Modric and Manchester United are unable to land Sao Paulo teenager Lucas Moura—which is looking less and less likely of taking place, according to Sky Sports.
United have reportedly been willing to spend up to £30 million on the teenager, so imagine what they could potentially be willing to spend on a proven talent who offers them a complete player right across midfield.
Modric is an obvious long-term replacement to Paul Scholes and potentially Michael Carrick also given his defensive tendencies shown last season for Tottenham—making him a very appealing option for Sir Alex Ferguson should he be willing to spend the money.
Given Modric's current falling out (via The Daily Mail) with Spurs manager Andre Villas-Boas and the club as a whole, it's hard to see him sticking around at White Hart Lane for the upcoming English Premier League season.
And if Real Madrid continue to back out of a deal, then Luka Modric to Manchester United might just be on again.
But it's all just speculation for now.
Am I crazy? Or does Luka Modric to Manchester United make some sense?
