Allison Schmitt, Dana Vollmer Show USA Swimming Is Much More Than Missy Franklin

Darin PikeJun 5, 2018

Allison Schmitt and Dana Vollmer want fans to recognize there is more to the U.S. swim team than Missy Franklin. If there is a better way to do so than winning gold medals in record times, they likely aren't interested.

Vollmer made her mark in the 100-meter butterfly, doing something many didn't think was currently possible. She went under 56 seconds, breaking the world record that was set in the now-banned performance suits.

She did so with an incredible margin of victory. China's Lu Ying won the silver but was a shocking 0.89 seconds behind Vollmer.

She will have another opportunity to make some waves as a part of the women's 4x200-meter freestyle relay team.

Schmitt hasn't set a world record in London, but her performances are impressive nonetheless.

She wasn't a favorite in the 400-meter free, but that didn't stop her from making a hard run at the gold. She finished just behind Camille Muffat of France, who set an Olympic record.

But Schmitt would have another chance at Muffat today in the 200 free. She was determined to not let it slip by and destroyed a competitive field that also included Franklin and Australian star Bronte Barratt.

Schmitt set an Olympic record and was an amazing 1.97 seconds ahead of Muffat.

Schmitt has one more item for her resume. When Michael Phelps was considering ending his competitive swimming career, Schmitt was instrumental in bringing him back into the fold of Team USA.

Phelps hasn't been able to live up to his Beijing accomplishments, but, realistically, who could? He's tied the all-time Olympic medal record of 18 and will most certainly break that mark this week.

Vollmer will be joined by Schmitt on the 4x200 free relay team as they look to improve on their team's bronze-medal performance in the 4x100.
